Notions About Oratory.

Abkbjcax defaulters reached Canada laat y«*r with from four to six million dollars of other people’s money. Canadians should not growl when their fellows get over on this side with a paltry gWO.OOO. ■' Mb. G. I. Akobll, the Massachusetts Bergh tells the people of the North west that a good protection against blitsirds in a little pocket compass such as can Be bought for twenty-five cents. A raw days ago there was a mnrde in a saloon in the now Quaker town of Whittier, in Southern California. The peaceable Quakers quietly gathered at the place, tore down the building where the whisky was sold, piled up the debrie and set it on fire, while the women and children stood by and waved handkerchiefs and encouraged the act.

Ths little town of Marion, Mas . where Mn>. Cleveland spent a few weeks last summer as the guest of Gen. Greeley, is experiencing a real estate boom, owing to her stay there. The residents are blessing her for the visit, and althongh they can’t be said to worship the ground she walked on, they va'ue it very highly. -

A CjLormd lady in a Boston faith cure meeting became very much excited over an account of a remarkable cure, the result of faith, and springing to her feet gave her experience in the same line, by saying. “I thank the Lord for what He has done lor me. He is always good to me. He has always blessed me. lam 37 years old and have buried three husbands. Bismarck says peace, and securities on all the European bourses go up while wheat goes down. The latest little war cloud is dispersed, and the political situation is once more serene. Nevertheless, Russia’s movementof troops to its western and southwestern frontier is not lessened, and the strengthening of the armed forces of Germany, Austria and France goes on without the slightest interruption. Since ths world began there never were before so many /men under arms in Europe at any one time as there are at this moment A continuation in this course tor a few years more, at a steadily increasing expeniture, would mean bankruptcy for more than one of the big continental Powers. This is the consideration which must ultimately lead to war or to a gradual disarmament of the nations by general agreement

-—hr- diamonds realty begin to fall through our atmosphere in meteoric connection, there is certainly a chance fora windfall for any one. So far, however, the diamonds that have reached our globe are very minute and hardly marketable. In Russia they are found a* 1 per cent of a stone of 4 pounds weight The cosmic problem, however, is much more likely to be affected than lhe market for precious stones It has been noted for some time that the character of the substances falling as meteors was changing. No new chemical elements have ever appeared in them, but the combinations of el°ments have been so unlike those on this earth that they have been kfiown to be certainly of foreign origin. These chemical combinations are of a different character as time goes on, and we can not test what yet is to come.

Washington Correspondence. I asked Gen. Manderson, Senator rrom Nebraska, the other day, if oratory was dying out in the Senate. "The conditions are certainly unfavorable to it,” he said; "that is, if you mean noisy declamation that might move an ignorant, out-of-door crowd. If you mean correct speech and the artistic use use of language to convey an impression, there is no place more favorable. "It is a whimseal notion of mine that stammering promotes effective oratory. Two of the most impressive speakers I have ever known, even in pathetic utterances, have been stutterers of the worst kind. If the idea is worthy of attention and thought, the impediment draws attention to it and emphasises it, like the cesural pause in the rymth of poetry. I remember a brilliant, stuttering lawyer in Ohio who applied for a change of venue and obtained it. Everything that he said of a humorous nature al wavs seemed a good deal funnier because of the obstruction of speech, and it seemed very ludicrous when be said triumphantly: ‘May it p-p-puu-lesss the Ke ort, when I have f-f-tfiledi here p-papers this ke-ase will fly away on the we-we-we-ings of the morning!’ *' The Chinese want to know why the sale of their tea is falling off throughout the world as against the teas of India.
