Ohai .toad Mills, of the committee on And means, says that he will call t’j# committee together without delay And will proceed at once to the consideration and formulation of a tariff-re-form bill, having in-view revenue reduction as well. ‘I do not think,’ said be, that it will be necessary to allow any protracted hearings of manufacturers or others interested in this claas of legislation. We have ample material on hand of that character, from which sources ah necessary information may be obtained. These hearings, if granted, will only caose delay. The condition of the country and the Treasury is such that it requires immediate action upon the question of reduction of revenue. The President asks it, and the Secretary of the Treashry urges it, and I shall do all I can to carry out their wishes.’ The chairman added somewhat emphatically ‘lf any effort should be made to defeat the measure, which we think will cover the ground; the parties engaged in it will suffer.’ ”
A Washington special says: “A report has been very widely circulated over the country that Mr. Randall would vote with the Republicans to repeal or modify the sugar duty. A personal friend of Mr. Randall, who talked with him Monday on this matter, was authorized by him to positively contradict this statement. Mr. Randall says there is not a word of truth in it. He regards the sugar duty as almost pure revenueand wiil oppose all propositions tor its repeal or for its large reduction.” Congressman M. A. Foran says that he and all other Randall Democrats will unite with the Republicans in Congress for the defeat of any bill framed in accordance with President Cleveland’s message. The President gave the first of the annual series of State dinners, Thursday night, to the members of tne Cabinet. Covers were laid for thirty. Randall indorses Sherman’s plan to take the tax off Hugar and tobacco and give the sugar planters a bounty. He says it will be adopted.
