HE KNOWS FIGURES.
But is Unable to Write His Name—A Mathematical Prodigy. Owingsville, Ky,. special. Riuben Fields, a moat extraordinary individual, has just returned to his home near this place from a trip through the West, where he excited the greatest curiosity of all he met. This miraculously endowed man is known ; ar and wide as the Mathematical Prodigy. Perfectly illiterate, being unab!e to telP one letter br 'figure from another, hebears the same relation to mathematics that Blind Tom bears music. Now about twenty-eight-fears of age, his ability to make calculations Was discovered when he was eight years ojjFfge. This peculiar faculty contmjwST to develop until he could solvit he most-intricate problems of simple or compound fractions, and mastering to perfection all the higher branches of mathematics. In short, his application of this difficult science is perfect, and he is ever ready and willing to demonstrate his ability in this direc tion, holding, as he does, that it is a direct gif t from God. . _ Present him with any problem that you may, and the invariable correct answer comes quicker than ’ thought. A grain of corn is of a certain length, and it is so many miles from the earth to the moon; how many grains would it take to connect the two points? This, and all kindred problems, he regards as very trifling and easy to solve. He can also tell to the fraction of a second the time of day or night. This marvelously endowed man has been tested by the most expert mathernajicians, who pronounce himperfect in his way, and scientists pronounce his wonderful power a profound . mystery. He knows little else than this one thing. He never went to school a dqy in his life, and has never worked except to occasionally aid merchants in invoicing. In that business he has been known to keep a half a score of clerks busy footing up, and he says it is impossible to make a mistake in his calculations. He is a very large man and has a look the reverse of intelligent. Having no occupation he lives around among his acquaintances, putting up wherever night overtakes him. Fields gave an exhibition of his powers before ex-Governor Crittenden and other distinguished men of Missouri, who’unhesitatingly pronounce him one of the wonders of the century. He is very proud of his gift and frequently compares himself to Samson.
Bducational Matters.
Colorado shows the highest average paid to women teachers. The New Jersey teacher’s reading circle has a membership of 1,955. West Virginia pays as mu«li to women as to men teachers. The National Education Association will meet at Washington Feb. 14 6 Harvard College received $3,000,000 in gifts during the past five months. A very large majority of all cases of near sightedness have their origin during the period of school life. Miss Alice M. Longfellow has been elected’a member of the school board of Cambridge, Mass. A building for the Ramona Indian girls’ school, at Sante Fe., N. M.. commemorating Helen Hunt Jackson, will cost $30,000, and will accommodate 150 ptipils. The University of .Pennsylvania has been presented with the law library of Benjamin H. Brewster. It consists of 8,000 volumes, and is one of the finest in the country.

HANLAN’S DEFEAT
Coatofthe Hinpacch Apnnuiiciiijrthe Result and the Route l< Came. : Philadelphia Press. lhe dispatch from New South Wal> s (announcing the victory in the (culling match there of Mr. Beach came over 12,000 miles and cost, $2 47 a word to send. It passed through several cholera-infected districts without being quarantined, and after being “relaid. ’ or given a fresh start, h ilf a dozen times, arrived in Philadelphia a few minutes after it (iad been'sent. The dispatch originated at Sidney, then it went to Adelaide, from there struck north, directly across Australia to Port Darwin, there it divided into the ocean and took in Singapore, Penang, Madras and Bombay, passing through telegraph stations run by operators'of every degree of black and shade of yellow, many of whom do not know who Beach is. Id some places the wires are strung on palm trees, then againlhey go through sandy deserts and under the feet of caravans. Some of the people among whom the message passed were baking in a sun as hot as Philadelphia’s hottest August, and others were shivering in November ulsters. The news did not stop to spread itself among the worshipers of Buddha, over whose templesit passed, but dashed northward to the more hardy and athletic believers ih Christ. From Bombay the electric fluid went to Aden, through the Red “sea, skirted the Suez canal to Port Said, back to Alexandria, through to Bona, in A ;■ to Marseilles v and then on to. London. Its route thereafter became more commonplace, for an every-day-sub-Atlantic '’cable, brought it to the United States.
Senators Evarts's Daughter.
Wesfcington Special. Senator Evarts’s house used to be full of young girls, but they have married off with such surprising rapidity that only Miss Mary Evarts, tire Senator’s favorite daughter remains. Miss Evarts, it is said, is quite willing to retire from gay society, and begins to find it a_bore, but the Senator insists that she shall go every vhere, takes profound interest in her toilets, and complains thatsbe cannot get enough evening dresses to please him. The Evartses are as much Washington people as New York people. The traditions of the extremely good taste and perfect simplicity of the bringing up of Senator Evarts’s daughters and Mr. Hamilton Fish’s still remain, and the way in which they were kept in the background as half-grown girls is contrasted wi|h the present fashion of allowing school girls all the privileges and pleasures among their own set of grown girls.
Coons in Connecticut.
New York Sun. Connecticut has long been famous for raising very big crops of big, fat coons, but the magnitude of the yield this season causeseven the veteran coon hunters to open their eyes in astonishment and to comment: “I never saw the iike of it afore.” Coons are everywhere. A patch of woods big enough to support one gray nquirrel and family is compelled this, year to sustain one coon and family, too. There is something the matter with the dog, or, the tracking is phenomenally poor, if the hunter cannot bag a coon any night within a mile and a half of this city; and a dozen miles to the westward, in the craggy valleys of Salem, the Lymes, and in East Haddam, a dog that shows his master less than four or five qpons after a night’s hunt is thrashed and seriously informed that he is a cur.
A Courteous Aot.
Borton Courier. An American lady went to London for only a day or two for the sole purpose of seeing a friend, who, by the way, belonged to-the nobility. When strongly, urged to meet a few friends at dinner next evening she declined, and on being pressed for a good reason was frank enough to say that she had with her no suitacle dress for such an occasion, bnt only a black silk. “Wear your black silk, and I will wear one too, so you may feel quite at ease,” said the hostess, and a promise was given to be present. What was the surprise of the Boston lady, on entering the drawing-room, to find all the ladies in black silk gowns. Lady Dash had written her guests, requesting them to wear black silk.” There is now thirty encampments of the Union Veteran Legion.
