Outwitting a Detective.

Buffalo Courier. One of the brightest detectives at ' police headquarters !is’ thej subject of a joke. He recently wag-out looking for a well known “crook,” and’one of the toughest young men in Buffalo. The officer spotted his game on Front avenue and started toward him. The latter “tumbled” very quickly and made off, turning down Fifth street on a run. The detectivejgave chase,” and the race was getting so hot that the crook bolted into a saloon. A pail of water was standing on the floor of the bar room, and qtrick as flash the pursued threw down his hat and began washing his face in it. In an instant the detective burst in, asking: “Did a man run in hexe just now?” “Yes,” answered the crook, vigorously rubbing his face, "just went out the back way.” The detective took the hint and went through the rear exit on a gallop, while Mr. Crook was out of reach.
