The Francesville fair takes place next week, from Tuesday till Friday. Rev. U. M. McCf uiwfe will preacb in tlie Baptist cliurck next Sunday at 11 o’clock, a. in. and 7 p. m. Isaac Reubelt, teacher of the grammar room, has been a father sihee last Friday evening. It is a girlMrs. E. R. Burr, of Jordan tp., whose sickness has been duly mentioned heretofore, died last SntururJay night.

Her place was temporarily filled by Mrs. Warren. She resumed her again, yesterday. Win. Lester, the painter, has been working for several weeks in Francesville,“wKerTfhe impending boom is breaking out in premoniitory symptoms, in the form of a general painting and brightening up, of the town, Mrs. M'aloy, who lives in Tlios. Thompson’s tenant house, across the river, is suffering greatly from an aggravated sore on her leg, and which has troubled her for more than a year. Her huhoaml, Johnny Mrdoy, is no good and—spends about everything he gets hold of for whiskey. « Sheriff Yeoman, who was up on tlve' bbi’ders of the Kankakee river several days last week, reports that some miserable, contemptible c urn have been killing fisT in the river with dynamite. It is a groat pity that the scoundrels can not bo caught and punished. The sheriff is putting up a lot of hay in the regions mentioned. John Minlcus got wroth at Nick Zimmer, last Saturday evening and cussed him in an unnecessarily profuse and comprehensive manner, but whether in high Gew man. or low English', deponent sallh nut. Mrs. Stalard and daughter, of Chauncey, are visiting Mrs. W. S. Stockton. Rev. S. E. Grimes, the new M. E. minister, will preach in the Methodist Sunday. Mrsi M. Sayers and her’ mother are visiting friends in Carroll county for a short time, after which they will scon depart for Kansas. The, books of S. Erwin & Son are now in tire handsof Hammond & Austin for collection". Thosb owing will please call at once and adjust their accounts.

Tommy Btissenden, the famous boy trawler, reached, home Sunday, aftpr nearly a year’s absence; most, of which time was spent in' Kentucky and Virginia. The Day brothers are plastering Granville Moccly’s new house, in Barkley tp. He goes alone but will be joined by Mrs. Sears as icon as he decides on a permanent location. Charley has hosts of friends, who will follow his course with thei r best wishes. Swift & llusco’s Standard Uncle Tom’s Cabin company, at the Opera House, Monday evening, had a very large bouse, numbering 500 at least. The company is a good one and gave a generally
-satisfactory performance, and some good judges pronounce their rendition of. tin; play, the best ever given in town. The songs and music of the genuine colored concert troupe which forms part of this company, is a leading feature of the performance. Win. Phillips, a former citizen of Rensselaer, is one of tbd leading members of this company and one of its best actors.
S. P. Thompson has been engaged last week and'this in superintending; the construction of a "big ditch on the head waters of the Iroquois, in Union 'tp. It begins at Alta r’s mill, and rubs two miles before it strikes Thompsons land. It.varies in dimensions , from fid feet wide at the top end J | font d'ep, to 16 feet vide ami 3 'feet deep. Twenty men an l eight teams are working on the ditch. A ditch was .made along this same line, some years ago, under the state law, but it was no good, and now Thompson is making such a ditch as he wants and all at his own expense. , '

Spitler. j Wilson W heeler, ( Charlotte Coruiel. j Thomas Ulyat, ( Gennette Hinds. The body of John Steel, the' victim of last week’s sad tragedy,! was taken to Oxford last Friday, , for burial. It was taken on the train which, when on time, passes here at 11 o’clock in the night. The train was detained by an accident, that night, and did not reach Rensselaer until seven o’clock Friday morning, and ' the sorrowing f riends who were accompanying the corpse, were compelled t 6 pass the night in the depot. To. the distracted wife especially this lonely vigil must have been a mos t' tedious aud unhappy experience, and especially as she was wholly without the-eomforting' influence of other women’s company. Emmet Kannal has sold his drug business to John Eger, who places A. F. Long, late ■ in F. B. Meyer’s store, in charge and to j whom hedransfers an interest in the business. The invoiceing is completed and Mr. Long is now in charge. F. 8.. Learning, who has been Mr. Kannal’s salesman has accepted .a similar position with Mr. Meyer. The location of the new firm will be the same as before, in Mr. Kannal’s room which is one of the very finest and best fitted drug-stores in the state. Mr. Kannal retains lib jewelry and watch-making business, and intends to largely increase his stock >in those liqes, also dealing largely in musical instruments. Tie will retain the use of a portion of his old place, uniil a more suitable situation is found,

THE CONTRACT CLOSED.
And the Site Selected. The directors of the Gas and Oil company closed up a contract, for .boring an experimental well, last Saturday morning, with Geo. Givins, who bored the wells' in Monticello and Remington. Ho is to bore as deep as the directors desire, and to be paid $1.50 per foot, for the depth actually bored, wheihor it be nine-hundred w ! nine thousand feet. lie is to case j tho well without extra pay, and if gas or oil is found in paying quantities he is to leave the casing t « M ' jin the well but if not he has the privilege of removing the casing. The boring is to begin very shortly,, as soon as a drilling outfit can be got from Walton, in Cass county. The outfit at Remington is to remain there for the preterit, as Treat Durand, of that place is having a well bored on his farm, near that town, not being satisfied with the result of the first boring. Saturday evening the directors, met again and decided upon a site for the wn?ll. A number of favorable propositions were received, but the decision was in favor of the site offered by Gen. Van Rensselaer. He offers a lot 100 by 150 feet on the east side of Van Rensselaer street, bordering on Makemself ditch, and nearly opposite 11. W. Porter’s residence. Hektgre.es to deed the lot to the company if gas or oil is found, and if a good well of water, and no gas or. oil is found, he will deed it to the town.
