Progress of the Gas and Oil Compauy.
' The directors of the gAs and oil company, at their meeting last week, elected Judge Hammond president of the company; A. Jjeopold, vice president, Win, A. i' Rinehart secretary and E- L. Hollingsworth treasurer. A committee was appointed to make a contract for having the well bored; and another committee appointed to select a location for the’ well. The last mentioned committee has looked over the ground considerable and Ims received several very liberal oilers of boring sites. Gen. Van Rensselaer offers 100 by 150/ feeton Make-emself, with the provision that if gas or oil is found in paying quantities the company shall have an absolute deed for the lot, and if a good well of water the town shall > have it. S. P. Thompson offers an acre of ground near the railroad on substantially the same conditions as go with Van Rensselaer’s offer. Mr. A. Leopold offers severe! lots, in Leopold’s addition, on very similar conditions except that if water but no oil or gas is found, the town can have the well by paying a reasonable, specified sum for the lot.
Points About The County Fair.
A general summing up of the merits and results of the county fair leaves tile conclusion that while it was not a failure it was neither a very gratifying success. Finnndally it was all, perhaps*, that could reasonably be expected. The receipts will pay all expenses ami the premiums in full, probably. The exhibits were not so extensive in numbers as they ought to have been, but have been much worse in some previous year's. The quality of what was shown was al) that could have been asked. The horse show was bigger and •better than ever before. The cattle show was good, but not so extensive. as last year. The show of sheep and hogs was large. In Floral Hall there was a large and excellent display of ladies’work of all kinds, but the exhibit in the fine art de par tin ent. was much less exfen hive tfianTast year, although' very good, what there was of it. The variousqgardcn and-farm products were also well represented. The races were a very unimportant feature of the fair. There was only one trotting race and one running race. At the trotting race, which took place on Thursday, D. C. Bond’s Billy Wonder took first money and McFarland’s Lena, second. Ohly these two were entered for the race. At a bicycle race, Friday, Harvey - MldbansdiF was'~tirstrMjeslie _ Clark second and John Halloran third. The number of tickets sold at the gate was 150 on Wednesday, 2020 on Thursday and 1130 on Friday. Total 3,300. The total receipts from all sources were about $1,250.-_

The Gettysburg Panorama.
The removal ot the great panoramic pictyre of ‘the Battle of * Missionary Ridge recalls the time when these gigantic, representations of the greatest events in American'history were first introduced in our midst. “Gettysburg” • has outlived “Missionary Ridge.” and bids fair to become a perennial institu tion in Chicago. Hardly a week pass es that doeS' n.ot bring hundreds of old combatants, Federal and Confederate, to look once more upon the crucial held of the hlighty struggle, and to live o’er again the hopeful, anxious, fateful day. I'be first sensation of the visitor to this extraordinary exhibition is one that does not lose any of its freshness upon a subsequent inspection. -Although aware, before entering, that he is looking at a building of 131 feet in diameter and 96 feet high, he finds himself, after ascending the little narrow stairs, in an open country, stretching many miles in every direction toward the horizon. It.is impossible to break the illusion involved in so splendid a triumph of perspective drawing. Then the accuracy of :he landscape in every detail is such as to call forth the spec, ial plaudits of the Pennsylvanians, one of whom exclaimed the other day, “My God! Lock at our Blue mountains.” The scenes of yalor, of destruction, of carnage and of death upon: which the spectator looks down seem never to lose, their dreadful interest. The real ground—with a gun here, a broken ammunition wiigon there, and a cavalry trumpet in the ditch—the real snake fency //nd the real stone walls arc so skillfully continued into the canvass that on s’ightly lifting his head one can bear the last agon hang cry of the rebel General Aimistead as'he falls in the moment of temporary victory. Cn coni'; the cotftondiiig hosts, despite the terrific gaps made in them by the the- : my’s artillery. «... Riderless, steeds, bewildered, fly they kn >w not where; dead and dying strew the field; innumerable instances ot individual heroism fill the on-looker with admiration. As a whole and in every .detail, the work is £.q unexceptionable that upon retiring from the bloody field old heroes feel that they have “fought -their batties o'er tignin.”—Chicago E.vening . iloili/n ;iT/ : A'ij.y Agti.a . .... .... p -
