Wednesday morning about 3 o’clock, at Bunker Hill, occurred the most daring rescue of a criminal in the history 'of Indiana. Tuesday evening Back Stanley, Deputy Sheriff of Cass county, went to Marion with a warrent for the arrest of “Windy Dick,” an ex-convict, who on the 13th of July robbed Mrs. Cassady, of Logansport, of $l5O at Marion. Stknley proceeded to arrest bis man, but was compelled to draw a re* volver before the ex-convict would submit to being .handcuffed. Stanley and his prisoner left Marion on the mid* night train and got as far as the crossing of the old I. P. & C., at Bunker Hill, without any difficulty. As the train slowed up for the crossing Stanley was attacked by three men, terribly beaten on the head and left unconscious on the car floor.' “Windy Dick” and his three pals jumped from the train and disappeared. At Bunker Hill Stanley recovered consciousness and offered a reward of SIOO for the arrest of his assailants. On account of his wouads he was compelled to go to Logansport and have them dressed. Hishead is [a regular checkerboard, but is not dangerously injured. Sheriff Stanley, Buck’s father, telegraphed officials along the line to keep a close watch for the four men, and the country about Bunker Hill is being scoured by a large crowd. “Windy Dick” jumped from the train handcuffed, and it is thought that he can not possibly escape. “Buck” Stanley is the man who tracked the notorious Green brothers into Texas and there effected their arrest. Logansport was greatly excited over the affair, and Cass county officials are endeavoring to capture the entire gang, Stanley was attacked from the rear, and is unable to give a description of his assailants.
