e SURREY AND VICINITY. Fanners nearly all through threshing. ' • A successful ice»creani-*supper at Mr. Geo. Thornton’s lastSatuiday night. ' - Miss Frankie Arcott of Chicago, is spending a few weeks with Simon Kenton’s. Mr. Tom Tanner of Norman and Galbreath's threshing machine, in climbing on the engine, Monday evening, caught hold of the band wheel, which turned and and rolled him under the front wheel which passed partly over his body. Some* ribs were broken, but how serious is not yet ascertained. He was itaken-i-home the same evening, a distance of twelve miles. .... Mrs. Maggie Fleener of Greensburg, Kan. is visiting her parents, AJ r. and Mrs. Geo. Thornton.

Died. —Un the 18th of July, of brain trouble, Louie Saile, aged 1 year and 9 months. Mr. Ephriam Sayers is on the sick list, as is also a little girl of Mr. and Mrs. Grim’s. The school at Center, taught by M iss Laurajdodshire, closed last Friday. Tire Misses Lizzie and Altie Cover have returned to Lowell. Pleasant Gant, who is attending the normal at Valpo, came home to attend the funeral of his sister, but has returned to finish the term, The Sunday School Jubilee held at the Alter Grove, was attended largely and the different schools represented did splendidly, and every thing went off nicely. .The raging fires at this dry time are creating quite an excitement in Northern Indiana. Weather still dry and great need of rain. The steam threshing machine is now in t]'.o country Preitchin§ -next-Sunday at SouthGrade school house. Sunday school still at the Joint school house. We see water melons have come into market. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McCune, of Valparaiso, were visiting Eli Spencer’s, this week. T Mr. and Airs. A. C. Jones and son, of Texarkana, Texas, are visiting their parents, Mr and Mrs. S. J. Bentley. Our blacksmith has plenty of work to do, still more to follow. Miss .Della Gillespie is attending the Normal at Knox. , 'Mrs. S. J. Bentley has been confined to her bed on account of sickness for the last two weeks; but is now convalescent.

People are very lusy making Austin and Nathan Keen have been drawing melons to Valparist), Kouts and Hebron the past week. They report them very dull sale at low- prices. - ‘Mrs. B. J., Sebring, Miss Mattie Ballard of Medaryville, and Mr. Montilles Shesler of White Co. Grandfather Barts, of Medaryville, fell last-week, while painting his house, dislocating his shoulder and bruising himself up considerably. He is upwards of 80 years old.
Loto Fern & Hazel. FROM ANOTHER CORRESPONDENT. The work of threshing is in full blast. The Comer Bros , Oliver and Marshall, have a new outfit, consisting of an engine, separator and “Katy did,” which gives good satisfaction. The citizens of this township were happily surprised on last Thursday by a refreshing showej’ of rain, the first in four weeks. D. H. Guild is attending the Battle Ground camp meeting, after which he contemplates visiting relatives in Hancock county. Crum Hess is slowly recovering from his severe illness mentioned by last week’s correspondent. Wanted.—A room in which to store that partnership furniture bought of the Monon Pastor and and brought to Gillam township last September. For further information address, John Coon Querry. On one evening of last week a boy about 10 or 12 years old who claimed to .be an orphan from Chicago, whose brother had pittilessly deserted him, called at the residence of Mr. C. W. Faris, who kept him over night and gave - him his breakfast. He stated that he was in search of a place to live, and Mr. P's philanthropic heart being touched, accordingly aided the little fellow in securing such a place at Uncle Adam Coppess’ where he went on one forenoon, and the nextmorning, after going as the folks supposed, to do the choreSj “made his tracks.” Rather young to be learning the tramp's profession.
