A Word to Our Town Subscribers.
Post master Batea tells ns that be often has considerable trouble explaining to subscribers, who get their copies of The Republican at ti.c Rensselaer office, why it ib tbM— — seme subscribers - get their copies of the paper an hour or two, or even more, earlier than oth<-rs g< tGo ir’s. and in regard to tliis matter we wish to make a few words of explanation: Oiu Rensselaer list L very large and it requires several hours work to print enough papers to supply it. The subscribeis’ names are arranged in our mailing galleys in alphabetical order, and it is our practice to get the papers into the post-office about as fast as they are printed, beginningjwith names in the first letters of the alphabet. It thus naturally happens that some subscribers got their papers some hours in advance of others.
Bro. Small Sees Stars
An old chestnut about the Star of Bethlehem have lately appeared in the Heaveus and being so bright as to be visible to the naked eye in sunlight, has gone the -rounds of the press so often during the last few months, that many persons have doubtless come h> believe the statement; especially must this be the case with some of the renders of the Idaville Observer, for its editor, the excellent and veracious Parson Small, declares that he has lately seen it with his own eyes, at two o’clock in the afternoon, “at which time it was visible directly over the meridian.” The planet Venus has been verybright during the last month or two, so much so as to be visible, at favorable times, in the day time, and being just about far enough east of the sun to bring it over the meridian at 2 o’clock, p. m., there is no dembt whatever but that Bro. Small and his fellow observers saw that beautiful star, at the time he mentioned.
Almest a Big Fire.
The alarm of fire which occur- ’ ‘ red in the Opera House, last Wednesday evening, just as the people were gathering for the Presbyterian Carnival, was followed by another the same evening, just as the same people were going home, and though not in the same building. this second fire was connected , witjj the entertainment. A. F. Long, clerk for E. B. Meyer, had prepared a package of chemicals to make red fire, to illuminate the tableaux at the entertainment, and ajsmall portion of it not being used, he carried it back to tfie drug store and laid it on a shelf, back of- the counter. I'he store was then locked up, and left entire- < ■y alone. -In a very short time thereafter the chemicals above mentioned took fire spontaneously, •and for a short time burned tiersly, and illuminated the whole street vith its ruddy blaze. The streets were full of people and some of them soon broke in the*front door nrnL-extinguish+'d- -the- tires—None'too soon, however jis sulphur and other very inflmmable substance s were near the spot where the file was, and had they became ignited the chances sos saving the building ami contents, as well as others ’ adjoining, would have been von i slight. This spontaneous ignition re mixture is as much foie.
