An Attempted Train Wreck-
ing. The early train to Chicago of ast. Sunday morning was made 6 or 7 hours late by the act of some iendish wretch or wretches who ;ried to wreck it on a large fill about a mile north of Greencastle Junction. A rail was raised at a point where the road is joined by a switch and a large stone placed under it. The engineer, John Green, of New Albany, as soon as he felt the jar, reversed the engine and applied the air brakes, and thus slacked the speed of the cars sufficient to save them from going over the 40 foot embankment but the engine and tender went over, and were a complete wreck. The engineer was badly scalded about the legs, but otherwise unhurt. The remainder of the train ran about 50 yards on the ties and stopped on the edge of the embatikment. Had it not been for the prompt action of the engineer in reversing his engine and applying the air brakes the loss of life would, doubtless, have been great.
