More About the Artesian Well.
Last winter we gave some facts regarding the old artesian well, in this place, and we are now able to add: a few more points regarding it, obtained from Hon. R, S. Dwigi gins, who knows more about the well than any other living man. It | whs bored at the expense of a Mr. I Han my who at "that time lived in ; La Porte, and' being made by inexperienced men, and with primitive methods, it cost Mr. Hanna full $15,000, or about ten times what such a hole would 'cost now. At a depth of something over 750 feet a small quantity of gas was discovered, but thought nothing of, at the time'. Also at the same depth a considerable quantity of petroleum, which, as was believed at- the time, could have been made to yield largely as a pumping well; and with the expectation of utilizing it in that way, an attempt was made to ream the well to make the bore larger, .and the reamer became fast in the well, and after many weeks of unsuccessful attempts to recover the tool, the proprietor gave the whole thing up in disgust. Mr. Dwiggins has been told by practical oil men that with improved methods now in use, the reamer could be the bore enlarged and deepened, without difficulty. Laßue Bros.
