Eraetiis Peacock, of this place, has just been granted a pension. Go to the new furniture store of Williams & Osborne for Bargains Ladies’ and; gents’ summer underwear at Hemphill & Honan’s. The next meeting of tho Ladies Literary Society will be on Saturday evening, May 7th. is beginning a large barn, back of his Residence across the river, .Mrs. W. P. Hopkins, a deaf mute, has been very sick with tumors, but is now somewhat better, but very feeble. Come in and see the latest styles in Spring millinery, just received from Chicago this week, at Hemphill & Honan’s. Mrs. Amzi LaKue has gone, in company with a brother, 'to visit friends in Milford, 111., and in Oxford and Attica, this state. She will be gone several weeks. John Florence has just bought two lots on the corner of Weston and Butson streets, opposite Dr. Kelley’s house, and expects to proceed at once to erect a dwelling thereon. . .
Mrs. Rachel E. Cox, administratrix of the estate of Reuben H, Cox, deceased, will sell the personal property of the estate, at auction, on favorable terms, on Saturday, May 7th, at her residence two miles west of Medaryville. Many bores for gas have, just been completed, in the immediate vicinity of Indianapolis, without success, and now the Standard 'Did Company is about to lay pipes into the city, from Noblesville, 25 miles distant, where there is a fine supply of gas. C. C. Sigler came home last Saturday, for a few days. His firm, Sigler, Goff & Powell, are now running about. 90 men, on their railroad contract, in Kentucky. They intend to work night and day, after this week, and it will fake until July to complete their contract. The talk of a gas well in Rensselaer is, as yet, only talk, but it is talk of such a character and by such men as warrants us in saving 2ESII an attempt will fee made, within a short time, to .organize a company " with ample" means to tlio'rougnly test the question whether ive have gas or oil beneath us, or not. Some mouths ago the editor of the Momence, 111., Reporter denonneed Belle* Boyd, the famous “Confederate Scout” as a deadbeat and fraud, and no better than she should be, morally. Belle liaS him arrested for - criminal libel, but a grand jury has just investigated the charge, and liasreleased the editor. A railfoad company was incorporated in Illinois last week to build a railroad east and west from Kaqlmkee City. The east line is only located to the Indiana state line. There is no probable terminal point for a railroad on the state line, east from Kankakee, however, and if. the road is ever built it will probably be carried across Newton and Jasper counties, to some point further east, in this state.
Last Wednesday morning as a freight tram on the IvN. A. & C. was going north, the track spread just north of Ladoga, and let 2 or 3 coal cars and 4 or 5 bos oars down into a neap. No ono was hurt, but the cars were badly broken up. The track was cleared for the passenger trains about-3 o'clock that afternoon, but the cars were not all taken out of the way tiiriate Friday evening. Out of a car load of lumber that was bad- ■ ly broken tip, the had just taken a tramp at the Ladoga depot.
A son was born to Wile Duvall, the 18th of this month. Ladies, stop at Hemphill & Honan’s and see their embroideries. Richard B. Moffit, of Lafayette, was in town Monday, representing the Lafayette Daily Courier. Dept. Sheriff Orlando Yeoman took Rebecca Jenkins to the insane asylum, Monday. Mies Minnie Hatton, of Rensselaer, is visiting her mother and sisters in the city.—Valpo. Messenger. Let no soldier give liis order for any book until he has seen Gen. Logan’s last book, “The Volunteer Soldier of America.” The Christian Missionary Society will meet at the residence of Mrs. C. C. Sigler, next Wednesday, May 3rd, at 3 r. M. All interested are invited to attend. The citizens of Ladoga have formed a company with a capital of $2,000 and will begin boring for oil in a few days. They think they stand as fair a chance as any other town. The Bell Telephone Company makeover $3,000,000 per annum upon an investment of $300,000. That’s better than a gas well.— Valpo. Messenger. Some persons over at Francesville are making an attempt to have that town called Petrolau. Francesville is not a very desirable name, but it is. a thousand times preferable to the barbarous thing sought to be substituted for it. The Indianapolis Journal is authority for the statement that the Chicago & Indiana Block-Coal road has leased the Chicago & West Michigan road only between LaCross, in this state and New Buffalo, on the shore of Lake Michigan, just over the Michigan and Indiana state line. Tho following poetical gem, though designed to comfort the maidens of the dry and windy west, will more than once bo found applicable to the uniprinkled streets of Rensselaer, before the summer is over: Though Providepce sends the gusty winds, That blow our skirts kriee high;; Vet God is good; He sends tho dust, w-nrsDinmOTV eye. Dr. Bitters was out to the far end'of Hanging Grove Monday, holding a consultation with Dr. Brown, of Francesville. in the case of the aged Mrs. John Ilamerton, who is suffering with heart disease, and other troubles.- She is upward of 72 years old. Monday was the fiftieth anniversary -efher marriage. Her husband still" enjoys fair health. A serious fall —Yesterday morning as Mr. Willey, the w-eH known merchant, reached the top of a tall step-ladder for the purpose of adjusting some prices to an immense pile of new Spring suits, they suddenly dropped wltK a dull, sickening thud—the prices we mean. Mr. Willey says no effort will be made to raise them again, and as natural consequence the place to get a Spring Suit at prices . way down low, is at tho Trade Palace Store.
A big slander suit has j ast been begun in the Jasper circuit court. Jonathan W. Hill says that Chas. W. Crawford falsely accused him at divers times, of wantohly and maliciously killing certain domestic animals, the property of the said Crawford, to-wit, a mare, a mule, fwe didn't suppose that a mule could be killed by any known process) a cow and five hogs. By reaspn of these false, wicked, slanderous and malicious charges, Mr. Hill has suffered damage to his high priced and immaculate -reputation, to the amonnt-T-oi ji_. large„ sum, to-wit $5,000. The parties live somewhere in the vicinity of Blackford, and from the above it may be inferred that the Nubbin Ridge reputation is a valuable 'possession, not to be trifled with, with impunity.
Millinery and notions at Hemphill & Honan’s. Mrs. Wile Duvall is' beginning to recover from a dangerous attack of puerperal fever. Surveyor Thrawls went up to Keener township Tuesday, and will remain there until Saturday. Mr. Emmet Kannal also rejoices a new birth at his place. It is a thorough-bred Holstein. The M. E. Industrial Society meets with Mrs. Peter Rhoads, near the old school house, next Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Joseph Hardman has gone sor 6 a four or five weeks visit with relatives, first in Chicago and then at Warsaw, in this state. Repairing furniture and picture framing a specially, at Williams & Osborne’s, opposite" the public square. Solomon Wells, a capitalist from Ohio, has been a guest of F'. J. Sears for past week. Ho started home to-day. Rev. K. J. Duncan lias given up the attempt to find a suitable residence, and himself and wife will board with Mrs. Powell, near the sheriff’s residence.
Last Thursday was C. P. Wright’s 40th birthday, and he celebrated the occasion by going ;o the barbers and getting a clean shave. The first for many years. The directors of the Pulaski county Agricultural Society have decided not to hold a fair this year, and offer the use of the grounds* rent, free, to any party wishing to hold a fair thereon. The enterprising people of lventland propose to soon find out whether their town is in the gas region or not. They have organized a company with excellent prospects for making a bore. $2,500 had been subscribed, last week. The Lafayette Courier claims to have ifctm good authority that within a short time the L., N. A. it C. Ry. will become the property of the Lake Erie & Western Ry. Co., and the Courier thinks that the consolidated shops of the two companies will be built at Lafayette. “'There’s many a slip," said .an old-gentleman the other day, “but it’s seldom I ever have one of this kind.” He had just slipped a dollar back into : h-B- pocket -Ihat lie had saved by buying a pair ot pants at Willey & Sigler’s, the fair priced clothiers at the Traclig Pal ace. The County Agriculture Society includes a bicycle race among its advertised .attractions of the forthcoming fair and.the .terms upon whjetTUiey expect to secure the race reveal the possession by that body a degree of financial acumenheretofore unsuspected. There are to be four entries at an entrance fee of ten dollars each. The purse is to be thirty dollars, divided into sls, $lO and $5 prizes. Thus the four bicylers are not only to contribute their attractions towards drawing in gate money for the fair, but they are to pay S4O for the privilege ot racing for’s3o, nottogpeak of the -inevitable “scaling'’ process which will further reduce that $3) down to S2O or perha-ps-ifU. Verily ‘Hr is a wonderfully ingenious scheme, and worthy of Wilkins Micawber himself._ Alas that the prospects for its perfect success should be" shrouded in such deep gloom; but where will be found four bicyclers such unalloyed idiots as to be willing to enter the race under such conditions?

The Laßue brothers sold four or five horses to dealers last . week. They have bought and sold at least a car-load of horses during the present season. Messrs. Willey, Sigler <k Wishard are proposing to put up a biick building at Mt. Ayr, this season, to replace the one lately destroyed by fire. Dr. Quivey’s mothei and his infant son came down from Chicago Monday. The Dr, and his mother expect to set up liouskeeping in a short time. Jacob Fishback has brought suit' against the L;, N. Davis, of Monticellq, who was sentenced for six years for blackmail, in compelling a man who was criminally intimate with his, Davis’ wife to give him notes for a large-sum—of —rnonoy, has been released on parole, by the Governor, and is now at home in Montieello, - One of the well-to-do farmers of Newton tp., who gave their notes to the Bohemian oats sharpers, for about SSOO each, is proposing to fight the collection of the note, and the case is set for the June term of the Jasper circuit court It seems to us scarcely probable however that it will be tried'in this county. The two or three others who were rop4d in have paid their notes we under stanch D. S. Willey, of this place, was married last evening, at the residence of the bride’s parents, in Moiion, —to—Alias Elia, Hildebrand. - The wedding was a brilliant affair, but of which we are unable to give particulars this week. A reception will lie given to the young coi\plo tomorrow night, by- h|[r. and -Mrs. J.-H; -Wifeley, parents, of the groom, at tiiis place. They will set up housekeeping in the Wm. Powers’ house yon River street.
Week before last a worthless little accumulation of gas was struck in ffhe glacial drift at a depth of about 150 feet, in the gas boro at Valparaiso, similiar to a dozen like dicoveries that have been made in this and adjoining counties; and forthwith it was taken as conclusively established that Valparaiso would have gas, and a premature boom was at once launched. It is s;pd that the proprietors of: the well were offered $50,(300 for their franchise on the strength of the prespect.
There are two or three circumstances which combine to almost give a local interest to the great caseins: concluded at Morris, 111., the trial of Schwartz and Watt, the Rock Island express robbers and murderers: Kellogg Nicliols, in "Goodland, and a sister near Mt Afr. Judge Dibell, the able jurist who presided over the trial, is a nephew of E. Libel 1, a merchant of Remington, and lastly he is a lifelong acquaintance of the editor of this paper, they having grown up on adjoining farms, in Will county, 111.

Guss, of Union tp., brought in a litter of seven young wolves Tuesday, and, drew the bounty, $1,50 each, upon them. J. F. Riddle, of Terre Haute, state agent of the Phenix Insurance Co., of Brooklyn, was in town Tuesday looking after the interests of his company.
A Westville girl whose folks don’t take any papers and are too stingy to give her pocket money, made a bustle by cutting a pump*, kin in half,—Valpo. Messenger. Williams & Osborne moved their stock of v furniture Monday, one door east, into their permanent quarters in the east room of the Williams-Stoekton building. O. M. Daugherty came home from his school in Porter county, Monday evening. He has been sick and unable to teach for two weeks, and came febme to rest and recuperate.
M. B. Halstead, of Newton tp., brought in a fine litter of five young wolves, last Saturday. Capt. P. W. Babcock removes! last w r eek from La Grange, this slate, to Canton, Ohio, in which last place he is doing professional work, for a corporation. He gets good pay and has congenial work. A building and loan' association has just been organized in Fowler, and also a gas well company. The county seat of Benton is giving evidence oL..being up with the times, in point of enterprise. The new Union Sunday School, in the Church of God , building,— held it’s first regular session, last Sunday morning. The attendance was about 70, and the interest maninfested very encouraging. J. TV. Duvall has sold the two young Norman stallions lie took to Kansas, a few Aveeks ago, for a big profit. He now expects to gather a cargo of Indian ponies to bring home with him. J. C. Porter, who is now at Greensburg, Kansas, has traded his hay bam at this place for property in Greensburg. He traded with TVm. Henkle, one of the chief founders of Greensburg, and a of Jasper county. , Elder Benjamin Dutton, of the denomination of the Church of God, will begin a series of meetings in the church building of ! that denomination, •in this place, next Saturday evening, and will continue over the second Sunday, or longer. All are invited to attend. . . ■
Of all tiie booming towns in booming Kansas, none are booming faster or with better prospects for permanency than Greensburg, the town founded principally by former Jasperites. It is the county, and already is sure of three or TourTailroads, and has good pros- , pects for one or two more. Its population was abogt 2,000 a month or two ago, or about double what it was last year at this time. Otir millinery has arrived.
