Mr. Vant Woud Gets Bounced.
John Yant AVoud, a former well known resident of Jasper county, and an exTCbuiify 'Commissionerr but wlio has been holding.a. position in the U. S. Navy-yard, at Brooklyn, N. Y., for eight or ten yeais, has just been dismissed to make room for one of the vei*y hungry and very thirsty democrats. His removal is to take effect orr April Ist. The following in regard to the removal of Mr. Vant Woud and several companions, is condensed from the New York World-, the leading Democratic newspaper °f New York, ‘•'lt is now nearly three months since a delegating of politicians visited Washington in the interest of Brooklyn Democrats ami with an eye single to securing for the party in this county the Navy-yard patronage. When they returned, it was with smiling faces, and the information soon leaked out that they had received a promise that in the wear future their wish would be granted. ' ~~ On Thursday the heads of four lifelong Republicans, who had seen many years of service ill the yard, rolled in the dust of dismissal. They were. Redfield Chandler, index clerk; John Vafit Woud, Chief Clerk in tiie Ordnance Department; Albert M. Kingsland, writer in the Construction department; John Teer, Chief Clerk in the Navigation department, and Henry Downing, typewriter and messenger. All are. to go on April Ist. With the exception of Mr. Chandler, all give politics as the reason for their dismissal. Mr. Vant Woud has been in the Ordnance Department for Nearly eight years. When asked yesterday by the World reporter to W-hat he attributed his removal, he said he thought so much pressure had been brought to bear by local politicians ou the Secretary of the Navy that he had been compelled to g|ve way and make the discharges. “I shall have been in this department for eight years on the first of April next, prior to which' time- 1 was emph+ye4 as-soeond ~clefk in tlfe Commandant's office/ It has never been intimated that my resignation was desired, but, on the contrary,'!, understood that I would not be asked to resign. 1 think that when this batch goes out it will about close out all the old employees prior to thp present administration, except-a lew o? ,those holding minor positions, and They will have to go also, I suppose.
