The Proposed Fee and Salary Bill.
The Foster bill relating to fees and salaries of county officers lias been reported Upon favorably by the House committee, and seems to have some prospects for becoming a Jaw. The bill as it went to the committee provided that the salaries of clerks of courts, auditors, treasurers, sheriffs and recorders in counties of less than 20,000 population shall receive a compensation of $1,200 per year. In counties of 20,000 and less than 85,000 the salaries are to be $1,500 and in counties of greater population than 35,000 the salaries are to be SI,BOO. The officers are to be entitled to no fees whatever, and all received are to be paid into the county treasury. Sheriffs are allowed 25 cts. per day for boarding prisoners, a reduction of 15 cents from the present rate. It is provided that judges of circuit and superior courts may order any officer to procure assistants when the duties of liis office are too great for one person. These assistants are to draw their salaries quarterly, oh auditor’s warrants. At the June term of the County Commissioners court in each county the officers mu|>t make an annual statement showing the amounts of fees by them taxed, collected and paid into the treasury. Severe penalties are provided for failure or refusal of officers to make these reports.
