Totai Disfranchisement.
The last Democratic Legislature jn its apportionment of the State for Senatorial and Legislative purposes did its dastardly work quite as effectually as ever the shot gun and “tissue ballot did in the South. Take for example the counties of Lawrence, Monroe, Jennings, Union, Ohio, Switzerland, Vermillion and Jay, and not one of them have a representative of their own but are thrown with a Democratic county in order to overcome their Republican majorities. This is simply a total disfranchisement and nothing less. Has anyone ever heard a saloon keeper denounce the third party in this state ? Has anyone ever heard a Democratic inveigh against it? Has anyone ever read in a Democratic newspaper a single word in condemnation ot the third party movement? To the contrary of this, all the Democratic adjuncts named above are employed in widening the breach between the socalled Prohibition party and the Republican party. Tlje Democrats of Indiana say in their platform that they are sternly opposed to prohibition, yet, at the same time they stand ready.to give aid and comfort to the third party. And why? Because they expect the third party movement to weaken the Republican party andmake victory easy for Democracy and its free whiskey following. And yet there are third party men who affect to believe that their organization is a menace to the Liqttor League. Indiana has one Congressman for every 38,093 votes, while South Carolina has one for every 13,890; Mississippi one for every 18,146 votes; Alabama one for every 19194 and Georgia one for every 14245 votes. Take it in round numbers and for Congressional repre-
sentation you will see that a South Carolina voter is equal to three Indiana voters. The gentlemen from Mississippi are equal to two Indiana voters. The same inequality exists when it comes to voting for Presidential electors. As the things stands-to-day, one rebel soldier is equal ‘to two whd fought for the Union. Voters of Jasper county, and voters of Indiana, is this the fair thing? And will you vote for Democrats in November. The manner in which the “reform” administration responded to Charleston’s recent appeal for assistance has caused the St. Louis Globe-Democrat to offer the following expressive pen-picture: REPUBLICAN • DEMOCRATIC WAV. That’s what might be called fine work. Will the Republicans of Jasper county vote for Democrats and thus say to our neighboring counties of Benton and 'Warren.that they do not care if the Democrats do disfranchise them. We don’t thpik the Republicans will do any such a thing. There is n 20 per cent , duty on wheat, and yet in these hard Democratic times it is only 65 cents a bushel.. . Let us put 40 per cent, duty on it and raise the price for the farmer. It there was no protection at all on wheat, and India wheat were shipped here the farmer could not sell his wheat at all and would have to quit the business—be driven clear out. Protection is what the farmer wants'. There is nothing which undermines party discipline so quickly as trading. It begets treachery and lying, and lays the foundation for internecine quarrels which rarely or never; heal. The duty of Republicans this year is to vote straight, be vigilant, and see that .every Republican voter gets to the polls and deposits an unscratched ballots The management of the Hospital for the Insane is a disgrace to our state and an outrage upon helpless humanity. The Gerrymander disfranchises Nationals, Prohibitionists and Re - publicans alike. Every hones? man resente it
