STATISTICAL.
Frequency of Earthquakes—ln This Country They Occur Every Twelve Days. During 1885, says Major Powell, Director ofthe United States Geological Survey, there wererecorded the following earthquakes in the United States and Canada: Canadian provinces, 8; New England, 5; Atlantic f-.tj.tes,'9; Mississippi Valley, 3; Pacific Slope, 34; total, 5.1.' During the twelve years from 1872 to 1883 therehave been recorded in the United States and Canada 364 earthquakes, distributed as follows: Atlantic Slops, 147; Mississippi Valley, 66; Pacific Slope, 151. From this list it appears that in the entire area earthquakes occur bn an average once in twelve days, and once a month on the Atlantic slope, Many of these disturbances are, however, so slight as to be unperceived by the majority of the people, and it should be observed that the list is more complete in the densely populated and frequently shaken Atlantic sloi>e than in. either the seldom-shaken Mississippi Valley or the sparsely populated Pacific slope. b.-e-.-Jj. . ~ 7-'> ■ ‘ -• "J
