Thomas Brennan, Secretary Manning's Private Secretary, has received a letter from Mr. Maiming which says that he is rapidly recovering, and hopes to be as well as ever by autumn. Mr. Brennan says that Secretary Manning will surely resume his duties as Treasurer upon his return to Washington. .. . Congressman Samuel J. Randall is said to be making preparations for a Western trip after Congress adjourns. He has promised to speak at the McHenry County Fair, to be held at Woodstock, 111., In September. - Mr. Blaine, when asked by a Connecticut Judge about bis chances for the Presidential nomination in 1888, replied that “perhaps the Republicans had' better trysome other man. ... .A secret circular has been sent oat by the General Master Workman of the Knights of Labor warning the assemblies that he has discovered that |K>liticians will attempt to pack the convention to be held in October, with the object of disrupting the order..,. The Ohio Greenback Labor Party held a convention at Mansfield and nominated a complete State ticket. A ratification meeting was held in the park which was addressed by Col. Jesse Harper, of Illinois, and others.... The Prohibitionists of Maine met in convention at Portland, and nominated Aaron Clark for Governor... .The Democrats of the Ninteerrth Illinois District have renominated Congressman Townshend.... The Prohibitionists of the Second Maine District have nominated Col. S. W. Eustis for Congress. The Republicans of Vermont have nominated Lieutenant Governor Ormsbee for the gubernatorial chair. The platform declares firm allegiance to the principles of the Republican party; asserts, that the Democratic party during its present control of the Government has shown itself incompetent to grapple with the living issues of the day, and has already demonstrated to unprejudiced observers that the change, of party control was a change for the worse and not for the better; that the Morrison tariff bill, with the riders attached bv the Democratic committee to an important appropriation bill, show' that the Democratic party is still opposed to the protection of American industries, opposed to practical economy and retrenchment of national expenses, opposed to civil-cervice reform, unfit to be trusted with the government of the nation; that “whatever may be the case elsewhere, the course of the national administration in reference to the disposal of Federal _ offices in this State, in committing appointments to party bosses, in supplanting faithful officers not justify chargeable with offensive partisanship by active and offensive partisans, and Removing honest”, experienced, and respected officers to m#ike place for saloon keepers, pot-house politicians, and Democratic strikere, has been a most absolute burlesque of civil-service reform, and deserves the condemnation of all who desire clean, efficient, and trustworthy public service.”... .The Tennessee Republican State Convention assembled at Nashville and nominated the Hon. A. A. Taylor of East Tennessee for Governor. The platform declares against bringing convict labor in competition with free labor; favors the passage of the Blair bill; favors the protective tariff; demands the repeal of the internal revenue system;

demands that corporations shall pay their employes in money and not in script and merchandise; and favors Irish home-ruin. .... The Congressional convention of the Eight District of lowa met at Chariton. On the first ballot W. P. Hepburn, present member of Congress, received 99 votes out of 101, and was unanimously nominated by the convention on the next ballot... .Democrats of the Fourth Indiana District have renominated W. S. Holman, for Congress. Congressman B. W. Perkins, of Missouri, was renominated unanimously by the Third District Republicans at Kansas City, Mo, .. . The Prohibitionists of the Fifteenth Illinois District nominated A. Easton, of Edgar County, for Congress.... Gov. Hill, of New York, has signed the act amending the law regarding imprisonment for debt. Hereafter six months is to be the limit of imprisonment on arrests in civil actions, and the operation of the law releases all prisoners in Ludlow street jail, New York, and elsewhere who have been incarcerated. bevondsix months. • *" fv Washington telegram: Speaker Carlisle does not appear at all cash down by the fate of the tariff bill. been disposed of for the present session of Congress by the House Education and Labor Committees, which made a,,final adjournment without acting upon the New Hampshire statesman’s scheme. This bill was debated in the Senate for weeks, and the discussion will no doubt have to be gone over again next winter.
