Prof. Mobton, President of the Stevens Institute of Technology, and Prof. Chandler of Columbia College, appeared before the Senate Committee on Agriculture last week. Both of the gentlemen are of the opinion that oleomargarine is a necessary, pure, and'-Wbolesome article of food'.!. The State Department at Washington has received intelligence that the British Cabinet does not indorse the seizure of American fishing craft by the Canadians. The prospects are for a satisfactory settlement of the difficulty... .The President and Mrs. Cleveland held a brilliant reception on the evening of the 15th inst,,. which was attended by Government officials, the diplomatic corps, the army and navy, Congressmen, etc. About one thousand invitations had been issued and there was a very large attendance. The members of the American Association of Nurserymen in session at Washington, called in a body upon the President. He told them that he was much gratified to meet the lovers of trees, and hoped that aIL their efforts would be successful. The association elected these officers for the ensuing year: President, C. L. Watrous of Iowa; First Vice President. M. A. Hunt of Illinois; Secretary, D. Wilmot Scott of Illinois; Treasurer, A. B. Whitney of Illinois; Executive Committee, S. D. Willard of New York, U. B. Pearsall of Kansas, arid Leo Veltz of Ohio. “The public reception at the White House Friday night,” says a Washington dispatch, “was mere numerously attended than any previous one within the history of that mansion. The doors were thrown open at nine o’clock. Before that hour fully 6,000 people stood in line waiting for admission. The crowd began forming at five o'clock and the line extended from the west carriage entrance eastward to Fifteenth street and Pennsylvania avenue. It probably numbered 10,000 in all, not more than twothirds of whom had gained admission to the grounds when the reception ended. The bride wore her wedding dress, and shook each caller by the h;ind.
