An Old Game that won’t work.

From the Democratic Sentinel. “The Message” is a six-column folio—half the size of the Republican, and a little more than half as large as the Sentinel. The space not spread with “taffy” and advertising—considerable of it gratis—is occupied in efforts to deprive the Republican and its editor of position in the party, and in decrying its competitors. It is an old game of its editor, worked by liim in other days, and wll now result, as it did then— in failure. Elder N. V. Reed, of Chicago, did not succeed in keeping his appointments here for last Saturday and S unday, at the Church of God, but the large and intelligent congregation which assembled at the edifice last Sunday morning bad no -great regr-et-Mr-Reed’s absence, for, however ably he might have addressed them, had he been present, his discourse could scarcely have excelled in interest, eloquence and force of logic, that of Elder R. S. Dwiggins, who supplied the place of Elder Reed. Preaching is like everything else, in the respect that practice is required to produce the highest excellence, and we presume that the Elder’s audience of last Sunday "WilHummimously -agree- that" the considerable experience he has had the past winter, as a preacher, has wonderfully improved and developed his powers a pulpit orator. He will preach again next Sunday morning, at the usual hour.
