■ A DEPUTY sheriff at Little Rook, Ark., ■who was badly beaten by the strikers while ' guarding property of the Iron Mountain Bead, has received Jav Gould’s check for S3OO. „ Father Ryan, the "poet priest of the Confederacy,” died at Louisville of organic disease of'the heart. Father Ryan was bom in Virginia, in 1840. James Wasson and Joseph Jaekson ( were executed at Fort {smith. Ark., for murders committed iu the Indian Territory. Before being handcuffed Jackson attempted to cut his throat with a bottle which some of the prisoners used as a flower vase, but was prevented by the guards after he had cut aii ugly gash in his neck. Both men protested their innocence, aud Jackson said the witnesses swore lies against him. This makes seventy-one men hanged on the Fort Smith gallows within the past twelve years, all for murders committed on the Indian Territory. ... .Robert Fowler, the murderer of Miss Lida Burnett, was hanged at Morgan- ... fields Kv.— Henby Fbyeb, an aged gatekeejrer in Druid Hill Park, Baltimore, lost his life by catching his foot in the crotch of a tree and hanging head downward.
