NEWS AND PERSONALS.

Daniel Daugherty has gone to Radnor* Carroll county, for a' few weeks. Miss Lydia Paris has gone to Attica to visit friends for a couple of weeks. No old stock at N. The authors of the brief are Messrs. E. P. Hammond, of Rensselaer, and D. L. Bishop, of Kentland. One of the new -comets will, it is stated, become visible to the naked eye, in a few days'. It may be looked for in the evening, in a northwest direction. It will become very.brilliant about the' end of the present month. The second’ comet will become brilliant <a little later, but we are promised the remarkable spectacle brilliant comets blazing 4n the sky at tlie same time, and what is more they will both appear in the eam6*quarter of the heavens, and at the same time be, apparently, nry new to sue)* other.

Austin and Aliss Nora Hopkins started for California,yon a pleasure trip, last Friday. They have friends in the Golden State and will visit them for about three months.

Wa learn that that part of the old W. J. Wright home lot lying fe the corner opposite tothe M. E. church has been transferred to Mrs. J. W. Medicus, and that Mr. Medicus will erect a dwelling thereon, during the present season. The W, C. T. U. will hold their next meeting Friday at 3 o’clock, P. M., at the residence of Mrs. Berry Paris. The election of officers and other matters will make the meeting of great importance, and a full attendance is requested.

Lafayette Courier : “Arthur Williams and Samuel Lr-ffow, two practical newspaper men, identified with the Typographical Union, have purchased the printing outfit of the eclipsed Comet , and will shortly start a weekly paper in the interest of. the wage workers, whif-h will probably be called the Labor World, Thaßev. -James TT Abbetf, pastor of the Morocco circuit of the ,M. E. church, was in tow n Monday night—his first visit since November. He is still meeting with abundant success in his ministerial labors, as 55 accessions io the churches in his circuit during the winter, clearly ‘shows. Twentyeight of these accessions were made to the Mount Airy congregation.

Dexter has gone to Plainfield, to visit her parents arid other relatives. “She expects to be weeks. Our Pleasant Grove papers were accidentally wrapped up with the Blackford package, last week, and hence they are very late in reaching Pleasant Grove. Mr. Geo. Hoover, brother of the county Treasurer, V moved into town Jast Thursday, and is now occupying the Harvey Wood property, near the old school house. Rivalry in the Shoe Trade may reach such a pitch that some firm may sell in the near future on installment; but, for the present, Ludd Hopkins will reduce stock at lowest prices for cash. Park Wright and family have moved into the old homestead, on Cullen street, and his mother will make her residence with them. The venerable lady’s health is very poorly.

The infant daughter of Leßoy Florence, of Barkley township, the birth of which was mentioned by our Barkley correspondent, in our last issue, died on Wednesday of last week. Its age was only about four days.. Persons intending to procure trees at the Rensselaer Nursery this spring, are requested to call for them at once, as they are now ready, and the sooner they are taken the better they can be handled. • John Coen, Proprietor,!!, Edward Perkins, who formerly lived near. Goodland, and -who married Miss Myrtie Henkle, of this vicinity, has lately been very sick at his home in Florida, and a relative from Mishawaka has gone to escort himself and family to the latter place. The sickness is said* to have resulted from eating frozen oranges. „

Will Kearney, the young lawyer of Logansport, lately sent to the penitentiary two years for horse stealing, has been released on parole by- tlie Governor, oil coifdilion that he behaves himself and quits drinking. The parole is granted for the reason that it is believed he was insane at the time he committed the crime. The assessing - of Marion township this year though a pretty big job, and difficult as well; is in a fair way to be done-on time and in - excellent shape. Three good men are putting in their whole time upon it now. E. L. Clark is assessing the town of Rensselaer, while the assessor, Mr. Porter and Squire W. H. Churchill are assessing the Country property. The M. El, S. S. is in a flourishing condition, attendance 'increasing, and as we'enter upon the study of the writings of St. John, the interest is growing." Babcock’s house,gn the West Side, and will set up house-keeping, about Alay lfft„ Alembers of the Town Board say that Town Treasurer Farden has kept the accounts of his office in most excellent shape. The Bissenden boys will soon begin the erection of a comfortable family dwelling on their lots east of Judge Hammond’s place. Miss Etta Spitler has finished her term of teaching in Alilroy tp., and is now making her home with Mrs. W. T. Perkins, at the creamery.

The LaLne Bros, have concluded an arrangement with A. Leopold for his new Arcade room, and will occupy the same with their grocery store, about May Ist. The Laßues have bought Mrs. Mary J. Hopkins’ house, on River street, now occupied by J. G. Reynolds, and expect soon to occupy the same as a residence. The “Chicago & Great Southern Railway” is now a thing of the past. The new company which has been organized upon its ruins, ea\j the road the “Chicago & Indiana Coal Railway.” J. H. Sayler, the evangelist mentioned last week, will begin a series of meetings at the M. E. church some time next week. He is said to be a very powerful and successful revivalist. n Mrs. Sadie Laßue wishes to inform the ladies of Rensselaer and vicinity, that she has engaged a competent trimmer from Chicago, for the season, and that the latter will arrive, and be ready Cor work, by next Monday.

Call and see us. / . . ~~ Some eight or ten members of the Knights of Pythias lodge of thi splaee, - went to - Monticello Monday evening to witness the workings of what is known as the “amplified third degree.” They were well pleased with the work and with the treatment they received at the hands of their Monticello brethren. Robert W. Erwin, of Carpenter township, is another veteran of the Mexican war, as he is also a veteran of the late war. He comes of awarlike family, -and' 4t is a circumstance well worthy of notice, that his father before him, also named Robert Erwin, was a soldier in the war of 1812, and his grandfather, still another Robert Erwin, served seven year* in the Revolutionary* war; •if 1 'A 1 .
