A Brilliant Success.
The!* ‘‘Dickens” entertainment and supper, given by members of the Rensselaer High School, for the purpose of aiding to procure a school library, was a most brilliant success. The people of the town heartily sympathized with the purpose of the entertainment, and generously contributed most enormous quantities of toothsome provisions for the supper, and patronized the entertainment and supper in vast numbers. ;On Monday night 480 admission tickets were sold, and about half that many meals eaten at the tables. The entertainment which followed the supper was very diverting, while the many quaint and beautiful costumes with which many of the characters of the great novelist were portrayed, formed a very striking and interesting feature of the evening. Dispite the great number of meals eaten Monday night, there was still so much
good victuals left on hand, that dinners were served Tuesday noon to a large number of people, and suppers in the evening. At this last occasion the characters again appeared in costumes, and a new feature was added by the voting of a gold ring to the must popular young man, and a silver cake basket to the most popular young lady. Chances to vote were sold for a cent each, and competition ran high. Miss Katie Green got away with the cake basket, and Mr. Walter Willey took the ring. Misses Lucy Healy, Maud Spitler and Dora Healey were strong competitors of Miss Green; while Bion Zimmerman and Simon Leopold made it interesting for Young Willey. The total receipts for the whole affair were $175.31. Of this sum about $125 will be clear gain. Enough to furnish the nucleus for a noble library.
