Till: EAST. F. W. Nickerson & Co., importers, West India traders, and commission merchants, of Boston, have failed, with liabilities of $900,000. The firm is largely interested in the Eastern Steamship Line, which is reported to be affected by the failure. e James Holland, the Texan who killed Tom Davis in New York, last year, during a quarrel over the purchase of Rome counterfeit money, has been acquitted. At New York the pallium was conferred on Archbishop Corrigan with imposing ceremonies. The strike of 15,000 street-car drivers in New York, which commenced promptly at 4 o’clock one morning last week, left the people of that city wholly without surface transportation until 2 p. m., when the company offered to pay $2 for twelve hours’ work. Railroad Commissioner O'Donnell was selected as an arbitrator in future troubles... .Miners of the Wyoming Valley have resolved not to work for the Susquehanna Coal Company unless effort is continued to rescue the bodies of the men and boys entombed at Nanticoke... .Thomas Christie,and Horatio King, clerks in the First National Bank at Bradford, Pa., were arrested for embezzling $60,000 through an ingenious system of “cooking” the accounts. P. H. Huntley, an old broker, was also arrested for abbetting the fraud. Sam Johnson, an aged negro, was lynched at Eatontown, N. J., for a murder--ous assault on a white girl named Herbert. ... .Rev. Dr. J. R. W. Sloane, of Allegheny City, was found dead in bed Alexander Stewart, the Vermont fanner who claims to be an heir of the dead millionaire of the same name, has filed a complaint in equity in the United States Court at New York against Judge Hilton to recover $200,000. Stewart has been adjudged a lunatic in his native State, and the action is brought by his guardian, Benjamin F. Whelden. A. V. Kautz, colonel of the Eighth Infanty, now stationed at San Francisco, is likely to receive promotion for distinguished services in Mexico and the confederacy.... The Commissioner of Internal Revenue says that the present year will show a very large increase of receipts in his department over last year. The first 6ix months showed an increase of over $1,500,000, and the second half-year will show more than that, in all probability.
