THE WEST.
The recent blizzard caused many deaths in the vicinity "of Oberlin, Kansas. Men were found in their huts and dugouts, with bread in their hands, frozen stiff... .An avalanche in Maroon Pass, Colorado, buried a party of men and mules, and it is believed that six of the men and a like number of the animals have perished. Four persons escaped by digging their way 0ut.... A boiler explosion in the distillery of Fairbanks & Duneweg, at Terre Haute, Ind., killed Frank McNellis and George Ottoman, and injured five other persons... ..A hurricane raged for three days ■on the Pacific coast, the wind at San Francisco reaching a velocity of eighty-two miles per hour. In the latter city, buildings, church spires, and chimneys were blown down, and streets and basements flooded by the bursting of sewers caused by the heavy rain. Plate-glass windows Were blown in, and awnings and signs sent flying in all directions. Two women were caught in a falling building and fatally hurt. The three Russians who stored dynamite within the limits of San Francisco have been sentenced to six months each in the house of correction.... .John R. Moore, of Lapeer, Mich., who had been derange d for several weeks, killed himself by thrusting his head into a stove.... A fire at La Crosse destroyed the planing-mill of Larson & Co., valued at $20,000.
N. V. Jones and F. Treseder, the Mormons arrested at Salt Lake, for attempting to bribe United States officers, have been held in SIO,OOO and $5,000 bail respectively. They tried to . bribe Deputy Sheriff Franks and Marshal Ireland to give them notice of the arrival of any process of court for the arrest of Mormons. The penalty is three years in the penitentiary.... Flames destroyed the Poorhouse, near Jackson, Mich., nnd seven of the inmates perished in the flames. Th© survivors were obliged to remain for some time in the snow before quarters eould be secured for them. The building was nearly new, aud was valued at $12,000... .It is said that about $5,000,000 in bonds of the St. Paul Road, to be issued for the construction of the extension so Kansas City, have already been negotiated.... The Governor of lowa has reinstated Auditor 8r0wn....C. L. Fpss, treasurer of a trust company at St. Paul, was arrested for the embezzlement of SIO,OOO. Eight men were buried in a cabin by an avalanche near Aspen, Col.—Three were killed, and the rest were insane when taken out.
