GENERAL.
A general order has been issued'from the headquarters of the Grand Army of the Republic informing the members that Washington has been selected as the site of the proposed Grand Army monument to General Grant. The Mexican Congress has approved the modified contract with Captain Eads for a ship railway, and the document only lacks the signature of President Diaz.... There were 221 failures in the United States reported to Bradstreet’s during the week, against 247 in the preceding week, and 316, 249, 230, and 169 in the corresponding weeks of 1884, 1883, 1882, and 1881 respectively. About 77 per cent, were those of small traders whose capital was less than $5,000. In the principal trades they were as follows: General stores, 38; grocers, 29; liquors, 18; dry goods, 13: hardware and implements, 13; millinery, 11; boots and shoes, 9; clothing, 9; drugs and chemicals, 9; grain and millers, 9; hotels and restaurants, 9; papers printers, etc., 9; bakers and confectioners? 6; carriages and wagons, 6; produce 6; tobacco and cigars, 6; furniture, 5; men’s furnishings, 5; lumber and builders’ materials, 4; jewelry, 4; oils and paints, 4; meat, 4; builders and carpenters, 3; hats, 3; harness, 3. The total number of vessels employed on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, include ing the Western rivers a,nd all inland navigation except the Northern lakes, June 3<X 1885, was 19,123 andtheir tonnage .2,455,720.... The Canadian Pacific Road runs trains westward from Winnipeg only 1,022 miles, to Donald Station, between the Selkirk and Rocky Mountain ranges.
