Burnham <fc Still’s saw-mill at East Saginaw, with 200,000 feet of lumber, was burned, creating a loss of $45,000... .At the Illinois Dairyman’s Convention Dr. Tefft, of,Elgin, made the claim that the great increase of insanity was due to the adulteration of goods used for food. ... .A Chicago special says: v “The widow aof Walter L. Newberry, of Chicago, died on Wednesday in Paris. As their daughters died Without leaving children, Chicago will soap receive nearly $2,500,000, under the of the will, with which to erect and furnish a public library in Chicago. A like sum will be distributed among forty relatives of Mr. Newberry. among them being an ex-Congress-man from Detroit. The wealth mentioned above arose mainly from the purchase, of forty acres of land in the city half a century ago.” The municipalcouncil of Salt Lake, composed wholly of Mormons, declares false the rumor that the church people have armed themselves and are organizing for an outbreak; as, also, the statement that arms and ammunition are stored in the tithing office.... Seven men were buried by the caving of a sewer at Akron, Ohio, four of them’ being killed, and the others fatally injured... . The Michigan grange reports 552 lodges in the State, with a membership of 15,000. Five years ago a syndicate in Detroit, comprising Senator Palmer, and others, contracted to pay Warner Newberry $2,000 per year until the death of his aunt, Mrs. Walter L. Newberry; who has just died at Paris, in consideration of SIOO,OOO to be repaid from the-estate in Chicago. Milton 11. Butler paid $30,000 for the claims of Edward H. and Walter A. Newberry and one other heir, and is to receive therefor about $250,000. Jesse H. Farwell and George Jerome also purchased an interest in the estate, and are certain of from $50,000 to SIOO,OOO. Mr. Butler says the estate owns nearly the entire town- of Green Bay. '

Bankruptcy hangs like a dove over the city and county governments at Mandan, Dakota, because a recent decision of the Supreme Court prevents the collection of taxes on real estate owned by the Northern Pacific Road.... The Hendricks Monument Committee of Indianapolis appeals to the country for con tri-, buttons to erect a memorial shaft in that city for the dead Vice-President... .The gas war in St. Louis led to a reduction to $1.50 per thousand cubic feet. A dissatisfied stockholder has applied to the courts for an injunction against the cut.... The Mayor and other citizens of Fargo, Dakota, have secured for that city a smelting works for iron ore from Manitoba, which pays a duty of only 75*cents a ton.
