W. W. Watson has been building an addition to his house on River street. He will occupy his house this week. The ladies of the F. W. Baptist church are preparing to give a supper on the evening of Dec., 3rd for the purpose of assisting in buying a bell for the church. A. & C., went to Philadelphia to attend the funerfd of John McCullough, the great actor, of whom he was an ardent admirer.
Li Dr. I. C. Kelley has opened a branch dental office m Monon, to which place he will go every Tuesday. He is talking of getting another man to help him in his office in Rensselaer, and of opening branch offices in Medaryville and DeMotte. i t- - ■
Hog cholera is reported from various portions of the county. F. B. Peters, of La fay et te, who had sued the commissioners of White county for $2,000, his charges for analyzing the bodies of Alva Spencer and Mrs. Schweitzer, who were believed to have been murdered at Monticello about a year ago, Friday received a verdict ■ at Delphi for $450.

Capt. J M. Wasson, of Marion tp., has been having bad luck with his horses lately. He has already lost two grown horses and one colt, and three other fine young animals are sick in the same way. The disease seems to be something in the nature of inflammation of the stomach.
John F. Stone, the agricultural impliment dealer of Remington, is in hafd luck. In addition to several heavy executions have been collected from him during the last year or two, the late term of court found several judgments against him, aggregating to the large sum of $4,153.17 and a-large amount extra for costs.
Mrs. Catherine Webster, sister of N. W. and Webb Reeve, of this place, died at her home near Kalamazoo, Mich., last Friday, of consumption. She leaves a husband and a young child. The body was sent to this place for burial, and not arriving until Tuesday evening, was taken at once to the cemetery, and buried. The funeral will be held at the Christain church on Sunday Nov., 22,1885, at 10:30 A- M; The services will be conducted by Elder R. 8= Dwiggius. All friends of deceased ate invited to bo protent.

The Turpie Bros., of Monon claim that it was mainly the machinations of enemies that caused their financial embarassments. They claim to have assets far in excess of their liabilities.

The big slander suit from the northeastern part of the county of David Linton against Francis M. Hershman was dismissed at the late term of court, by agreement of parties. The alleged slander consisted in Hershman saying, at various times, that Linton had cut down and destroyed about half a mile of wire fence belonging to Hershman.

Capt. Abram Gant, a solid citizen of Wabash county, and Uncle of John L. Gant, the Deputy Sheriff 1 , is about to settle in Jasper county. He will engage in the stock raising business on one of the big Makeever farms, in Newton township, for a fe .v years, with the ultitoate intention of buying a place of his own. Mr. Gant is one of those stealing men whose qualities are a blessing to any commun. ity. The Lafayette (omet attempts to work the chestnut of making sport of the “small talk” with which the columns of the average country paper abound. All the same, no country paper could maintain it’s existence long without it. “Small Talk” to a country paper is like the small of salt: “It’s that wliat makes yer victuals taste so bad when it aint in ’em.— Michigan City Enterprise Another splendid addition to the fine stock of Jasper county was made last week, in the purchase at the great stock show, at Chicago, by Mr. A. McCoy, pf a fine herd of blooded Hereford cattle. They were bought of Fowler & Vannata, of Lafayette. The herd consists of 7 cows, 2 calves and 1 bull. They have been taken to McCoy’s farm in Hanging* Grove tp. The price paid is under stood to h ave been in th e neighbor hood of $3,000 for the herd. Major C. C. Bennett,, the crippled old lecturer on the subject of the Sandwich Islands, liafcl but poor luck in Rensselaer. On Thursday night, when he was first ’announced to speak, the weather was so wet that the lecture was postponed till Friday. A small admission fee was charged, and the attendance was very slim. On Saturday night he tried the experiment of giving a free lecture, with a collection at the close, with even worse success, financially, than before.
One of the parties in Monon who felt himself aggrieved by the manner in which The Republican spoke of the prosecution of Mr. Banta, the Monon school superintendent. calle out nttention to the account of the affair given by the Monon Dispatch. That account, which appears to us as a rather one sided statement of the matter, seems to make the prosecution justifiable and proper, but also in- j timates very plainly that improper means were imployed to induce the boy’s father to withdraw - the, prosecution.
I?he Jones women have come back to town, looking well dressed : and prosperous, and on Monday' Dept Sheriff Orlando Yeoman went up to their place and took Mary in custody, on the old milkstealing charge. Mary accepted the prospect of going to jail again with much cheerfulness, but Pet waxed mightily ' wroth over the prospect of seeing her beloved daughter again torn from her material armstand cast into a dungeon, and vented her feelings in a torrent of billingsgate and profanity that turned the air blue. She wound up by declaring that the —— town wasn’t fit for decent women to live in, no how.
