The- Republicans of New York have put forward a state ticket that is absolutely without objection, and all,ihe Independent papers are giving it their support. The prospects for a most en couraging Republican victory in that state are excellent.
President -Cleveland writes a very tine sounding letter on the subject of civil service reform, but all the while his cabinet goes right along in their underhanded and clandestine manner, violating the letter of the civil service law, daily and hourly.
The great trial of Chesley Chambers, at Bloomington, has not yet been concluded, although the evidence is all in and the arguments of counsel are now m progress. To judge from the reports of the trial published in the state papers there would scarcely seem to be any reasonable grounds for doubting that Chambers is the guilty man.
Mr. Kimball, receiver ol the Chicago Great Southern, was in town a short time last Thursday and talked with same of our promcitizens in regard to the question whether the connecting link between his road ahd the ‘ Chicago and West Michigan, would'pass through Rensselaer. The Fowler Era, which was largely rnstrrnneirtal in keeping the Gt. Southern out of the Hub, now cries for it with might and main. As we have before suggested, there is nothing to hinder the Fowler people from casting that village down to the crossing. There is no inducement held out to the railroad company to deflect their line for the amusement of the Fowlerites. It would pay them better to go abound by Watseka. — Orford Tribune.
An excellent general review of the Indiana township frauds wiU be found on one of our inside pa* ges. • There are no grounds for believing that Pollard ever beguiled any of the trustees of Jasper county or ever even attempted to do so; never-the-less in view of the uneasy feeling prevailing among the people everywhere in the state, it might be a wise thing for the board of commissioners; at their next session, to call the different trustees together and to give to each an op* portunity to explain how he has managed the public interests committed to his care.
According .to the Indianapolis of the Chicago.’ Central Indiana Block Coal and Ohio River Road, which was recently incorporated, stated work Was to have begun on the line at Brazil <|n Monday morning. A large force of laborers have been engaged and the work will be pushed as rapidly as possible. It is highly probable that the niachine and repair sjiops will be located at Brazil The citizens of that place .are holding out to the railroad people dazzling inducements in ‘the way of ground, etc. , . • .
