THE REPUBLICAN.
For The W. C. T. U.
■ 11l ■ {passing along the streets of Renssejaep, at a late hour Saturday night, our were saluted with a sort of requium ijamppspd of these words: “Oh! why .did. they dig my grave so deep.” Over and over were the words repeated, the pnly variations being confined to the fflnp.. which sank oitimes into a mournful padence, and, anoh. rose into a pipre boistrous and higher key, this being followed by a general hand-clap-ping, wjiich, we suppose, was intended so frighten away the evjl spirits that piust have been gathered there, with fhem, around the convivial board, doling brave battle for these mens’ souls. They were men, or had once been men. JVe have agrandideaof man -woman’s .defender, provider and protector—able to fight life’s battles and come oft’ more .ithan conquerer, and go down to the grave at last covered with a halo of jionor, living green in the memory of his descendants, still dearly loved and lamented by those of his own immediate family, who gather hope and comfort from the promise* of “crowning day” beyond the grave. But “No drunkard shall enter the Kingdom. What of tnose who were singing “Why do they dig my grave so deep?” The voices grow fainter and'sadder, passers by paused, glanced in at the window, and, shuddering, possed on. Not ;one, breathing the pure air of Heaven in the faint starlight outside, but who could Realize the hidden, mysterious honor of that “inner temple of Satan,” where the evil spirits were gathering more closely about their victims, their long, bony fingers clasping their throats until the words died away in an almost inaudible gutteral. most horrible to listen to, And then, as though the ghostly clutch was loosened, rose again in a seemingly last effort to regain their freedom. And these were men! And wives look up to them, and are in duty follow, alas! too often, in their footsteps. And, mayhaps, the companions of our fair, young daughters were among them, breathing the pestilential air, if not engaged in the unholy drama. Oh, fatal screen! Fatal to the happiness of many ,a fair, young girl! Fatal to the peace and prosperity of many a household! Fatal to the welfare of any community! Thrice fatal to the flower of American chivalry! Will it never be abolished? And will men continue to dig their own graves so deep that they must needs bury beneath the sods of the valley, and beyond the hope of resurrection, every flower of respectability, of honor, hope, virtue and love, using, instead of pick, and shovel, that firy fluid that eats out the heart, consumes the brain, nor ceas es its evil work until body and soul are alike destroyed, and the demons of evil drop the poor victim, as a trophy, at the feet of their Satanic Master. Carrie Clark. BAND OF HOPE. {Many thanks are due Charlie Warner for his kindness in drilling the Band of Hope Tuesday evening, August 25. Mr. Warner is requested to meet with the Band of Hope and the W. C. T. U.. at the M. E. chuich, half past seven.

The Crawfordsville News of Friday evening, July 31st sayp: “Elder W* D. Owen, of {Logansport, who for the past year or more has served the people of the Christian Church in this, city,‘will preach for the last time next Sunday, morning and evening. This announcement will be received with regret by the hundreds of admirers of the reverend gentleman, who, heretofore, have looked forward to his appointments in pleasurable anticipation. In the months of labor performed here, Rev. (His election to Congress, while it may be gratifying to him* as a realization of ambition, is none the less a disappointment to his Christian friends here.

Swamp Malaria Conquered. I have been using Swift’s Specific in my family for the past two years as an antidote for malaria and also as a blood purifier, with the most satisfactory results. I live on the banks pf the Oucliita river, in what is called the swamp country. Myself and family enjoy as good or even better health than the average people who live in the' hill country. 1 am confident' that S. S. KING’S EVIL Was the name formerly given to Scrofula because of a superstition that it could bo cured by a king’s touch. The world Is wiser now, and knows that SCROFULA can only be cured by a thorough purification of the blood. If this is neglected, the disease perpetuates its taint through generation after generation. Among its earlier symptomatic developments are Eczeinaj Cutaneous Eruptions, Tumors, Boils, Carbuncles, Erysipelas, Purulent Ulcers, Nervous and Physical Collapse, etc. If allowed to continue, Rheumatism, Scrofulous Catarrh, Kidney and Liver Diseases, Tubercular Consumption, and various other dangerous or fatal maladies, are produced by it. Ayer’s Sarsaparilla Is the only powerful and always reliable blood-purifying medicine. It is so effectual an alterative that it eradicates from the system Hereditary Scrofula, and the kindred poisons of contagious diseases and mercury. At the same time it enriches and vitalizes the blood, restoring healthful action to the vital organs and rejuvenating the entire system. This great Regenerative Medicine Is composed of the genuine Honduras Sarsaparilla, with lellow Dock, Stillingia, the lodides of Potassium and Iron, and other ingredients of great potency. carefully and scientifically compounded. Its formula is generally known to the medical profession, and the best physicians constantly prescribe Ayer’s Sarsaparilla as an Absolute Cure For all diseases caused by the vitiation of the blood. It is coneentrated to the highest practicable degree, far beyond any other preparation for which like effects arc claimed, and is therefore the cheapest, as well as the best blood purifying medicine, in the world.
