“Where are the American poets?” an English critic demands. Where are the American poets ? Why, bless your soul, they are everywhere and their pame is legion. You will find one in nearly every newspaper office in the United States, with his machine rigged up in the corner df his room ready at a moment’s notice to respond to the call for copy, and a great many more besides chained in the basement dungeons under the press-rooms ready to be let loose when occasion demands. None of your '“you, you” poets, either, such as the English make laureates of, but real bona fide “yi, yi” poets, all wool and a yard wide, and closely woven at that. Where are the American poets? You should rather ask, Where is the American that isn’t a poet ?
