GILLAM ITEMS.
Farmers are busy plowing corn. There is considerable sickness in the township. Rev. Thomas Mason, President of Philander Smith College, is visiting his brothers and friends this week. Miss Anna Des Elms, instructor in the normal department of same institution, has returned home. The Sabbath schools united and gave their Children’s Day exercises at the Chapel to a very large audience, and all seemed to enioy the occasion. The people of this township are alive to the work of education; we have graduated eighteen in this towship and the work has just begun. Superintendent Nelson's work is appreciated and he will find no one lagging next year The following pupils jwete perfect in attendance for second month of summer term, in DisC. No. 3, D. H. Guild, teacher: Mist Prevo, Mead Prevo, Gurthia Guild, Grace Coppess, -Odena Posey. Jessie Paris, Ettie Long, Jay Hess, Carrie ’ Paris. Willie Robinson, Emma Paris. Eva Hess, Ella Preshburn. Linda Robinson, John Robb, Judson Hunt, Janie Guild, Emma Lewis and Maud Lewis. s Tho schools of the township, with one exception, have closed. J Center and Pleasant Ridge, united their schools in the closing exercises. The genenus patrons of both places came with baskets filled with good things and spread them on a table prepared lor the occassion in the grove. A crowd of about one hundred and fifty took part in this interesting part of the programme and it is remarkable bow well each one performed his part of the work. After dinner the schools formed in line and marched to the house to complete the exercises which consisted of music, declamations and dialogues. It was a high day for the little folks. The graduating exercises were a grand success., The house was nicely decorated and completely filled with fLttentive'listeners. The graduates were seven in number, six from Gillam and one from Barkley, their names and subjects are as follows: ' J. J. The graduates did much credit to th«»*
selves and their respective townships, Outside of regular programme,' we tvere favored with some appropriate and appreciated Remarks by Dr. I. B. Washburn, of Rensselaer, also T, J. Farden played One of his charming pieces On the organ, which almost cuptivated the entire audience, especially the female part of it. Tom, the GiHam boys are keeping an eye on you.
