London dispatch: “A terrible explosion took place in the Pendlebury colliery', near Manchester. There were working in the mine at the time it occurred 349 miners. One hundred and sixty of ,these'were at work iu the level in which the explosion occurred, 204 have been recovered alive, twenty-two bodies have been taken out, and one hundred and twenty-two are still unaccounted for. The work of exploring is impeded by bad ventilation and water.” A St. JEetebsbubg newspaper publishes the statement that the Ameer of Afghanistan has massed nearly all his troops in Afghan-Turkestan under his own command. A portion of the Ameer’s troops is armed with 3,000 breech-loading rifles and fifteen field guns, which were presented by the Indian Government. It is feared that there may be trouble in case the Russian troops should move toward the Oxus River One hundred and fifty lives were lost by the recent colliery explosion near Manchester, England. “The English Ministry squabble seems to have reached something like a deadlock," says a cable dispatch of June 22. “The Tories are indisposed to take office unless the Liberals will give assurance that they will help them carry on the Government, and th 4 Liberals are indisposed to give any such assurance, naturally feeling that, as the Tories have denounced their methods and charged Mr. Gladstone with incapacity, they should take the machine and run it themselves. The Tories in the House of Lords meanwhile have postponed action on the redistribution bill —a dodge which looks more like the scheme of Randolph Churchill than of the Marquis of Salisbury, and ate now holding U over the heads of the Liberals as a menace to

compel them to give the required assurances. The deadlock, is an interesting one as it stands, with the chances favoring the Tories.
