• . . VVE EJ^ST. The firtt night mptfo t Ky Gen. Grant in the monnt&ins was a bad one for the illustrious invana, and he arose from his couch in the morning in a depressed condition. During ttie day he walked a few times around the cottage, and once to the brow of the mountain, teturaing in an exhausted state. , He indicated by signs that he wanted writing paper, and then penned two letters, one being headed, “Memoranda for My Family," the other being addressed to Dr. Douglas. In the former document he stated that he thought he was failing, and gave certain instructions. Dr. Sands was was hurriedly summoned from New York. physicians attending General Grant have been ascertained; that, through private contributions, their bills up to the present time have been liquidated, and that a balance of $1,500 remains. Gen. Grant’s condition is fair, says a dispatch from Mt. McGregor. The swelling at his throat is of unusual prominence, while the interior of the throat is not materially different from its condition the day he arrived at Mount McGregor. Ex-Congressman S. S. Cox, United States Minister to Turkey, left New York for Constantinople last week. The Hon. Emile Frey, United States Minister to Switzerland, ex-Senator Roscoe Conkling, and Chief Justice Waite, also sailed for foreign parts. Mr. Conkling goes to Carlsbad for a vacation... .An action instituted to wind up the affairs'of the South Pennsylvania Railroad syndicate, and for a distribution of its property, is on trial beforfc Chief Justice Sedgwick, in New York. Counsel for plaintiff claim that the railroad was built at a cost of $15.000.000. for which $40,0011,000 of securiti: s were issued, in violation of the laws of Pennsylvania. Among the defendants are William H. Vanderbilt, William K. Vanderbilt, William C. Whitney, S. B. Elkins, D. O. Mills, Andrew Carnegie, J. D. Rockefeller, and Abram S. Hewitt..... Flames in Heermance, Dickinson A, Co.’s nine-story storage warehouse, at the, corner of Reade and Greenwich streets, New York, did SIOO,OOO damage. Fire at Newport, N. H., destroyed the Court House and several other buildings, involving a loss of $70,000... .Cars on the Broadway Surface Rai road, in New York, began running last Sunday. The old Broadway stages have been permanently withdrawn. ... .New York’s imports of general merchandise, exclusive of dry goods, last week were $5,207,178 in value.
