THE SOUTH.
In imminent peril of their iives, two men crossed the ice in the Susquehanna River, to aid the Roberts family, who had been starving on an island near Port Deposit, Md. A horse and cat had been kilted and eaten, and Mrs. Roberts and her little babe had perished for want of medical attention. One hundred armed and masked men made a raid on the Franklin County (Texas) jail and demanded fiom the jailer the keys to the jail or the delivery to them of Ben Rawkins, a negro murderer. The jailer warned the mob to desist, and refused to deliver the prisoner or the keys. The mob then attacked the heavy iron doors, makings noise which brought hundreds of silent spectators to the scene. During the attack .on the doors the frenzied shrieks of the alarmed prisoner could be heard several squares away. Failing to batter the doors down, the mob went to a side window and broke the bars, and then entered the jail and broke into the cell occupied by Hiwkins, who was so paralyzed with fear that he could not stand. He was carried a mile from town and strung up to a tree and his body left hanging there. A negro murderer was taken from the Bland County (Va.) Jail by an armed mob and riddled with bullets.
Miss Eva De Coursey and ..Clarence Newell had a lovers’ quarrel in Washington County, Md., the young woman refusing to speak to her sweetheart. Newell conspired with two fiiends, and one day last week when Miss De Coursey was passing Newell’s house, the report of a pistol resounded, and the two young fellows darted out with the information that Clarence had shot himself. Miss De Courser rushed in and found her ]<>ver on the floor with a blood stain on his forehead, Remarking that she would die with him, she took up the revolver and fired, the ball passing very near her heart, and she now lies in a dangerous condition. Newell drew blood from his nose With which to smear his face, and had fired his pistol into the f100r.... One hundred Mexicans are reported to have crossed the Rio Grande, en route to C.irizo Springs, Texas, to release, Mexican cattle thieves confined there.... The citizens of White Rock, Texas, met and passeed resolutions requiring a Mormon elder nam’d R. M. Stevens to leave the region.. , .Wayne Powers and George Gibson, who killed a man for sl2 and a suit cf clothes, were executed at Estellvilie, Ga. Nine convicts were whipped at New Castle, Del., eight for larceny and one for burglary... .Irishmen at Chattanooga boycotted the Daily Times for criticising O’Donovan’s course.
