THE WEST.
M. W. Ryan, Clerk of Cook County, DI., received a summons from Speaker Haines to appear before the Illinois House of Rhpresehtatives with the ballots cast for Representatives in the Sixth Senatorial District last November. The Clerk notified the United States District Attorney, and was subpoenaed to appear before Judge Blodgett, who promptly issued an order that all returns from the Second Election District of the Eighteenth Ward be deposited with the Clerk of the Federal Court. By advice of counsel, Mr. Ryan obeyed the Judge’s order. Asland (Oregon) dispatch; Alexander Jones, a mail-carrier from Grant’s Pass to Wilderville, Mrs. George G.bsori and her two children, and Mr. McClung were drowned while attempting to ford Applegate ereek, which was swollen by the recent rains. On Shaw’s Island, Washington Territory, a lunatic, who lived in a lonely spot, killed a hunter, and, later, shot and killed one of a Sheriff’s posse. The latter then burned the cabin, the murderous lunatic perishing in the flames.
A horrible murder ig reported from Radical City, Kan. The victims are Mrs. Bonham, a widow, who had lived on a farm there about a year,, and a son, aged 16, and a daughter, aged 20. They had been dead some time when foundl It is not known that the family had any enemies, or what motive could have inspired the author of the crime, unless it was committed by tramps who have lately been driven out of Kansas City. Mm. Bonham drew out some money she had in a bank several months ago, and had frequently received large sums by draft, oo that it is supposed she had a large sum of money in the house.... Near Freeport, DI., the State Veterinarian ordered killed three horses which were suffering from glanders. One man in Boone County, another in Peoria County, and a woman in Kane County, are reported by Dr. Paaren to be afflicted with glanders While 150 guests were congratulating a couple who had just been married at Plato, 111., the parlor floor fell into the cellar. But three persons were injured. ...B. H. Goodman, a gtaih-shipper has begun suit at Lafayette, Ind., against the Lake Erie and Western Road for $30,M0 damages, for discriminations against him in. the past eight years. . At Vincennes, Ind., Henry Strattman killed his father-in-law and fatally injured his wife. The murderer had four children very ill of typhoid fever, and was probably driven insane by g ief and religious fanaticism. Such a presure is being brought to bear against Mormonism in Salt Lake City that the practice of polygamy is threatened with extinction. Dissensions in the Mormon Church are causing its gradual disintegration, and the young Mormons are trying to breaJt away from ecclesiastical rule. A city of refuge is being established by the church near Guaymas, in Sonora.... A preacher who conducted -revival meetings at Vincennes, lowa, carried away the family Bible from a farmhouse whose hospitality he had enjoyed. He was captured, convicted of larceny, and lodged in jail at Keokuk... .The Trunk 1 Line Presidents ' refused to accept the resignation of Commissioner Fink, but he will next month take a vacation. A mixed assemblage of Socialists, Anarchists, and Dynamiters gathered at Folz’s Hall, Chicago, last Sunday, and held an animated pow-mow. In the West Twelfth Street Turner Hall 1,200 dynamite sympathizers listened to incendiary harangues. F. I* Geger, of Cleveland, t)hio, a former agent of the International WorkingAssociation,, says there are four groups of anarchists in that city who are ripe for a riot A distinguished Chicago Socialist says there were 5,000 to 6,000 Anarchists in that city. These Anarchists, he avers, are not Socialists, but pkople who have broken up the Socialistic party there.... In a Chinese riot at Eureka, Col., a white citizen was killed by a stray bullet and a boy wounded. An indignation meeting was held, after which all the Chinese houses were visited, the inmates ordered to paak up their effects, and then marched to a large warehouse, whence they will be

In sp'to of hard times Southwestern Kansas is booming, and the new counties in the State, heretofore esteemed almost worthless except for grazing purposes, are rapidly filling up with agriculturists.... Cincinnati lawyers who have been conducting the prosecution of Thomas C. Campbell will, it is said, petition the Bar Association to ask Judges Connor and Robertson to resign from toe association because of their decision in the Campbell case... .A west-bound passenger train on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad went through’ a bridge near Creston, lowa. Six or seven persons were kilted and ajarge number wounded.... Lee Linn, editor of the Courier, Wabash, Thd., shot Wm. Rickey, probably fatally. They had had a difficulty before, and this was a result of it... .Russell B. Swift attacked W. H. Little, of the St. Louis Chronicle, for a publication in reference to his father, and severely cut his .head and face with a loaded cane.
