Rensselaer Republican, Volume 17, Number 24, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 19 February 1885 — He Was a Mormon. [ARTICLE]
He Was a Mormon.
It is well-known that many Mormon missionaries have been sent recently to Europe, and a few of these Latter-day Saints came to evangelize Switzerland. Unlike the Salvationist who publishes in the highways that he is here to preach Christianity and adjure men to turn from drunkenness and other evil ways, the Mormon goes stealthily about his work, and is not always recognized as a disciple of Joseph Smith. A short time since a respectable father of a family in one of the principal towns of Switzerland introduced to his family, consisting of four daughters, an extremely pleasing and well-bred American who had been recommended to him by a transatlantic correspondent. After an intimacy of several weeks the American called on the gentleman one morning, asking to cee him in private and said: “Sir, I have become unalterably attached to your charming daughters. Will you grant me their hands in marriage ?” r “My daughters! Sir, are you mad ?” “NoOir; lam a Mormon.”—ContinentarGazelie. «
