February, though it is the smallest mouth in the four, the “runt of the family”, so to speak, and a “little one for a cent,” is able to work in about as much mean weather as any of them, when it comes to that; and* its no slouch of a month in the matter of holidays and memorable days, either. First there is Candlemas or ground-hog day, on the second, then St. Valentine's day on the 14th find Ash Wednesday, or the first day of lent usually- comes in this month; while Washington’s birthday can always be depended upon to come around on or about the 22nd ot this month* —_J - Capt. Henry Bowman, son-in-law of Mr. Micah Saylor, of Rensselaer, died at Omaha, Nebraska, •January 29th, of quick consumption, at.the age of about 50 years. His illness was of very brief duration, beginning with homorrhage of the lungs, and lasting but a few weeks. He leaves a wife and seven children, some of the latter quite young and others of adult age. Mrs. Bowman and .the younger children will probably soon return to make their home in Jasper county. Mr. Bowman was formerly a resident of this place, and at one time filled the position of Deputy Recordeiyleaving here about 12 years ago. Here is a programme of what the weather has been, as we remember it, since the summer broke off short, about tire middle of December: The first of the week, snowing, blowing and drifting. The middle of the week, clear, and colder than Nova Zerobla, with the thermometer down in the basement, and tying to get lower. End of the week, warms up enough to thaw a little, and hatch out another blizzard. Whenever the blizzard for any week has failed to appear, the next week there were two of them. —, . mo ■»*» —■ —— The L., N. A. & G., and the West Michigan Railway companies are giving a big excursion to the lumber dealers of this state, to Muskegon, and other points in the lumber regions of Michigan. R. P. Benjamin, of this place, is Rmong the excursionists. But man proposes and the blizzard disposes. The above item w r as written before the storm had done its perfect work, and we must now qualify its statements by saying that Mr. Benjamin did not join the excursion, on account of the snow blockades, and that the excursion train itself got stuck in a snow drift on Monday afternoon, up above Monon, someplace, and the engine of the regular Monday afternoon mail train, which left its own train at Monon and went to the assistance of the excursonists, shared tho same fate. The Methodist MEETiNos.-The revival meetings at the M. E. church are usually well attended and are awakeniiig a good deal of interest. In conducting them the pastor, Mr. Webster, has the constant assistance of the Rev. D. K. Tindall, of Mtilberry, and an occasional lift from Revs. Havens and Me Reynolds. On Saturday erening last there were five accessions to the chui ch: Misses Dora Clark, Fannie Wood, Mattie Moore and Hattie Flynn, on probation and Mrs. Soplironia Phillips, by letter:' OnSunday mornipg there was one accession, on probation, Miss Dora Clark. On Sunday evening the accessions numbered seven, nil on probation. Their names are as follows: Misses Louisa Platt, Florence Wood, Viola Clemens and Maud Baylor, and Messrs. J. F, Warren, Henry Platt and 'Mahlon Hind?..
An Icy Immersion.
Last Sunday, at the conclusion of the morning -services at the Free Will Baptist church, the congregation, and a considerable number of spectators, repaired to the river, at 'a point some distance above Mr. Perkin’s ice-house, where a large hole had beeu cut through the ice forfthe purpose. and witnessed the baptism by immersion of the following named persons: Mrs. Lewis Day, Mrs, Hawkins, Miss Cornlra, Miss Liz-xi-9 Cover, Miss Maggie Cover, Miss Alice fSTmver and Edward Siiith. The Tippecanoe County Fair.
Lafayette Journal. The Tippecanoe County Agricultural Society met on Saturday to diseuss the question as to whether they should give a county fair this year. It will be rememberedrthat the last fair resulted in a heavy financial embarrassment and the society still has a debt of about $4,000 on its shoulders. After/, thoroughly discussing the question it was decided that the fair would be hell, but that it would be made more of a local affair. No exhibitions’' will be courted outside the county. The amount of tfcfe prizes will be reduced to a sum not to exceed $3,000. It will open on , August 31... and. will continue ddring Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, September Ist, 2d and 3d. The c'bject of the Association in holding the fair is to attempt to cleat enough money to pay off the debt which they owe. The local merchants will be appealed to as exhibitors, and it is hoped th£tt the amount necessary can be raised.

As Bad as the Worst.
In many respects the storm which began last Sunday evening,, was . the worst of the season. The thermometer did not indicate so low a decree of temperature as on some previous occasions, but the presence of a fierbe wind made the cold much more penetrating, and hat'd to endure. At the beginning of the storm, Sunday night, occurred several heavy peals of thunder, an unusual* phenomenon in the winter in any case, and still more so in a*auow storm. On Tuesday, tho worst day of the storm, the high and bitterly cold wind, com - bined with the thickly falling and heavily drifting snow, made it a day to be remembered as one ot the severest ever experienced in the state. In respect to drifting and blockading wagon roads and railroads, this storm is by far the worst of Abe present winter, and, probably tho worst for years. At this writing (Wednesday afternoon,) the condition of the wagon roads in the vicinity can only be surmised, as no one, 30 far as we know, has ventured into town since the storm: but from the magnitude and density of the drifts in the immediate neighborhood of the town, it is evident that their condition must be lairly appalling. The condition and extent of the blockade on the railroads, i 3 not known, ’ either) but that it surpasses auy thing of the kind that has happened tor yea rs, is unquestionable. On our own road, the L., N.A. & C., the blockade has been complete. The la3t trains to pass* Rensselaer were the two early, north bound trains, of Monday morning. They were kept in this place for several." hours by the stalling in the snow of a freight train, but they at last succeeded getting away from town, but have not yet succeeded in getting to Chicago, but are stuck fast somewhere up the road, in the vicinity of Lowell, according to a report from the depot. Monday’s forenoon rq ail train left Chicago on time, but got no further than Hammond. The evening train, north bound, ot the same day, got as far as Monon, and fin all/ returned to Louisville. Nrt les3 than six engines, it is stated, are stuck fast, at different points, between the Kankakee river and Hammond.

Boston merchants are rivaling one another in rather questionable advertising devices. A clothier recently moved all the goods from his show window, and put in their place a big live monkey. For days the sidewalk was blocked with spectators, and policemen had to he detailed to preserve S order. The free menagerie became such a nuisance that the Mayor, deciding it to be in the nature of a show, suppressed it as a place of unlicensed amusement. Another clothier-turned his windows, which were very spacious, into a wax-works exhibition surpassing : in horrer the objects in the crypt of the Eden Musee. This drew immense multitudes, and, an some ol the objects | were decidedly obje - tionable, the pro- | pr etor achieved his object in being talked about by the whole town. A thud man attracted attention more pleasantly. He converted the plate glass of his store front into immense mirrors, in which gazers 1 simply saw themselves .more or less satisfactorily. :.
