Rensselaer Republican, Volume 17, Number 22, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 5 February 1885 — A Man-eater. [ARTICLE]
A Man-eater.
An auimal, a native of the Rocky Mountains or wesforn Lava beds, i-s at tnis time, running at large on the farm of John Makeever, two and onehalf miles we3t of Rensselaer. Mr. John Martind&le first called my attention to the track. 1 decided at once -that it was made by a specimen of the Rock Bear, which gained the name of from its habits; being the only animal known in the west to eat dead persons before decomposition. I have never known one to attack any living person, but they are very ferocious aftej being attacked and wounded. The animal is small, usual weight 300 pounds, makes a very large track for the size of the animal, the track re■sembling that of a common hear. lt_s ■color is jet black, with long, coarse hair, which is generally used in ornamenting fine saddles and robes. My authority for this decision is from .experience. I have traveled to the western coast seven times, have been over all the States and Teritories w st -of the Hockey Mountains, and become thoroughly acquainted with all the western tribes and animals. Now is the time for a chase, while the snow is on. as his track can be seen any day, •A'ojue, everybody, and help hunt him.
