THE REPUBLICAN.
The Humpty Dumpty dramatic company, advertised to pi ay in .Rensselaer last Friday and Saturday. evenings, did not show up either in this or any of the neighdio'fing towns in which it was advertised. We. suspect that the combination was a snide, amdtuer affair, and that it has met a natural •uni not altogether untimely end. Mr. Dexter, of the Nowels House, is out several dollars on the advance but whether lie got into any others iii this place, except the newspapers for their advertising, we have not heard. e
The Driven Well Patent Out.
The driven well patent, which has been the source ot so .mueli troublesome litigation against farmers, expired January 14, and any one is free hereafter to drive a well on his own premises without fear of prosecution. It is time that this most absurd and uhjtist patent*, should come - to an end. It is enough almost to make one wish that the patent office itself were abolished, to see it become the means ot putting such an unwarranted restriction on the rights of the people.-Ex.
To the Asylum.
John Henkle was taken to the Insane Asylum, last Thursday, by Sheriff Yeoman, E. P. Honan and .Joseph Henkle, brother of the unfortunate man. He appeared to understand very well where he was going, and was glad to go there, and made no trouble, except that he insisted in exhorting the brethren on the train, which he did at great length and much to their edification. Arriving at the asylum, he recognized the place, and was ready and able to take the lead in showing his companions about the establishment! He also enquired for the doctor who had charge of the asylum when he was last confined there, eight years ago. We hope and believe that we shall soon be able to chronicle Mr Hinkle’s restoration to mental health, and his return to his family.
Another Case in the Justice’s Court.
John Lonorgan, the proprietor of the saloon on Van Rensselaer street, was arrested Monday, and taken before Squire Purcupile, charged with selling liquor to a minor, said minor in this case; being none other than Hattie Wilber, the young girl arrested a week or two ago, in company with theThresher woman, charged with being an inmate of a house of illfame. When the case came to trial Monday afternoon, Lonorgun, by his attorney M. P. Chil-; cote, tooir change of venue from Squire Purcupile, and the latter sent the case to Squire Churchill, who liven two or three miles north of town, .Lonorgan being released on S3OO recognizance. The trial was set for Tuesday morning, and Squire Churchill came in to hold it in the court house, but the defense decided to have the trial by jury, and thd case was again postponed until the afternoon. At the trial it was found that the constable had bagged an eminently respectable jury, consisting of a dozen of the solid business men and mechanics,of the town. After hearing the evidence and the arguments of counsel the .jury wrestled with the matter until 10 o'clock Yesterday aud then agreed to disagree and were discharged, the case will be tried again next Wednesday, we understand.
