TESISTEST FROM NEW YORK.

The Presidential Contest Mot Yet Settled. The official count in York, upon which depends the result of the presidential election, was begun Tuesday, and is still m progress. Up to yesterday afternoon forty- four counties had been canvassed, and no material changes hud been made in the pluralities previously announced. These counties, however, the republican leaders claim, were not expected to make any great changes. In New York and Brooklyn is the real contest, and here, it is claimed, errors and frauds will be discovered which will give the state to Blaine. Should any such discoveries be made, the matter would probably be taken to the courts, as the laws of New York t provide, and in that case, a final decision ,H*a§r ppt be reached for several weeks. Republicans have good grounds fGr hoping that the decision will be favorable to then; but be that as it may, they will cheerfully abide by the result of a fair count, but they will insist upon their rights and if Blaine is the lawfully elected President of the United States no amount of bluster and bravado will prevent his innguratiop. Topi Wood talks of contesting the election of Owen, in this Congressional district, on the ground, principally, of alleged informality on the part of the canvassing board of Jasper county, in canvassing the vote of Barkley township in the absence of the trustee of that township. If Tom had a glimmer of sense lie would know that lie could not get the vote , of .Jasper county thrown out on that account, and even if he did, the majority against him ( about 400 i is still so great that Owen would still be ahead. -•

The Vote in the County.

In another place we publish a tabulated statement of the official vote of the county, on the 4th inst. The total number of voles cast, was 2*228. Of those tho Republican Electors received 1281, the Democratic Electors 913, the National Electors 80, and the Prohibition 44. The Republican plurality is 3GS, or 43 less than it was two years ago. The entire Republican vote is 1281, or 33 more than in 1882. The Democratic vote is 013, an increase of 76 over the figures of 1882. The National vote this year is only 80; r. falling oft’of 71 votes, since 1882. The Prohibition ticket was a new element in Jasper county politics, this year. It received 44 votes. It is a somewhat remarkable fact that the total vote of the county is less, by 8 votes, than it was two years ago. The greater increase of the democratic vote in the county as compared with the republican, is accounted for, in part, bv the fact that the larger number of Nationals of two years ago who have gone back to the old parties, have voted with the democrats. The case of Jordan township illustrates this fact plainly. The total National vote of that township, two years ago, was 58. This year it is but 24, while the republican vote of that township has increased but C in the two years and the % democratic vote lias increased by 20 votes. Other townships, as Carpenter, Wheatfield and Milroy, which show a large falling off in the National vote, show the snme Pouate increase iu the demvofce. Another cause of the republican party was hibition vote which was Dainly from the repuhli-
