A New-Yorker who was up in the hill country shooting rabbits had occasion to call at a country store for some shot. “Yes, I’ve got powder,” replied the little old man behind the counter. “How much did you want?” “I’ll take a pound.” “What, a hull pound?” “Yes, sir.” The merchant came from behind his counter, slowly adjusting his steelbowed spectacles, and for a long minute looked the New-Yorker over as one might read a circus bill. Finally he said: “A hull pound, and you are going to pay cash down ?” “Yes, sir.” “Well—uni—well! Mister, for the last fifteen years I’ve been contending that the volume of floating currency was not large enough to do the business of the country, and I never expected to see this day.
