The Republican campaign in this county has made splendid progress during the past week. Meetings have been held in all parts of the county, all of them earnest .and entlrusiasfHß and near;ly all of them attended. R In Rensselaer, the Hon. Samuel :R. Mason, the distinguish*. 1 ex- ■ Greeiibaeker, of Ik’ai'Sklvania, made a noble speech to a crowded Court room, on Thursday evening; and on Saturday evening S. P. Thompson addressed a good au- ■ dience at the same place. Gen. I Milroy also made brief remarks at this moetiug. On Monday evening another splendid meeting was held in the Court room. The old heigh- ' bors of the venerable General Mihun itirm-A *1 ..-d ?b d Um room beyond its seating capacity, and the speech of tliQ General well fe.paid them for their trouble. In addition to a ctmviiicieg and uniisw uaiiy T patriotic political speech, he also gave a very entertaining talk about Washington Territory, and the Indians, us a considerable tribe of .vhoni he has charge as age ii L 7"
.A n audience 7 of grand propor-1 tioiis met at DeMotte, on Saturday afternoon, to* welcome the Hon. ■ W. D. Owen, iv-hfi-liad an appoint- ' meiiE”tllere - at"Eli!it time, but to the ? great disappointment of the people, Mr, Owen missed the. “Three I” train at North Judson, and hav- ; ing in of with an accident at Oxford, I a fewfilays beforej“ivas“ itr.ab'e to make the journey by team, anb. therefore, was unable to be pres-1 ent at the meeting. Messrs,. M. E. ■ Chilcote and 1. "D. ~l)iinn were I present, however, and made good ! speeemts. The Hon. John A-. Tibbitts, of I Connecticut, made four speeches ! last week. Afternoons at Surrey and Marlboro, and evenings at : Barkley CeifiierTand)lndopeiMeaceyU in Gillam township. The afternoon meetings were as goo 1 as could have been expected, an 1 the evening meetings wt-re si’mply magnificent. The Gillam meeting was one of the best that has yet been held in the county, and was so large that it was necessary to held it out of doors. The Major is an excellent speaker, and Jiis lucid expositions of the tarifi ques|tion can not fail to have a good 'effect. / . Eon. D. p. Baldwin had a good meeting at Remington Tuesday 'evening. The meetings held by our local speakers have been uniformly good, but -arc too numerous to ' meiu.io?. in detail. . '
