THE M'SWEENEY CASE.
?lj Mis < mi Act He Forfeilert IXI Claim to American Protection. .'ohii Fineitv .- speech. I have heard the cry of Pie Sweeney vftised. 'i’he changes have been rung irptrn frenn one -end of the land to the other. Let me say here that when an Irishman leaves Ireland and comes to this country, and assumes the oath and the duties.Tjfcitizenship- when he doesthat, and enjoys the freedom of this land, then, when he deliberately returns to his own country, and by accepting dice under the British law beeOmes again a British subject, he iiaVfc-IfSited all right to the protection id this country, and ailhougn 1 should bo sorry to have a harsh fate awaiting ing - him, at the same time I have no respect for my man that changes the ' glorious condition of American citiaenshtp f- i- the-paltry condition et a British subject. If I were to commit that act I would feel that I was served right iu being abandoned. If Mr. Me ... Sweeney had not, accepted oiliee. then indeed, would the State Department he culpable in not defending him. I hope this will.be a lesson to all others bf his h ind,'that the mere fact of liv- ■ Ing in America is"not sutiieient when a than brought before a British court, lie hhouid be able -to produce his datura!iyati :>n papers or to prove that life was a minor before lie came to tins conhtry- -That - would stop all this trouble.. Bin let the plain truth .be, fold. Too many of our men who were arrested < n the. other side were nc rli-' nt :u regard to their natural iza'bm papers. Even the”unfortune man who ' was hanged for the slaying ot t ary, and to save whom, your representative, a-: U.hiak_you will acknow!ege,-did his utmost, that unfortunate man irtborod under the sante dilliculty—his papers were not in regular form. And I will say, in justice to the incumbent of the presidential chair that he telegraphed M nister Lowell to recognise ..Olioiimil just the same as if }ie had his pitpars, but the English government knew they had a technical advantage, and, despite the American protests, they refused one week's respite.
s. r. Thompson addressed a splendid meeting at Center school house, in Gillum township, last Saturday evening, with a speech of old time power and logic. Ah the close, of the speech one of the best Blaine and Logan clubs in the county was organized. - - -- - ' • The Well known slrongthning properties of Iron combined with other tonics and a most perfect nervine, are found in Carter’s Iron Pills, which strengthen the nerves and body, and improve and complexion.
