A Card from the Ladies' Literary Society.
Gen. Van Rensselaer, who feels fatherly pride in whatever -contributes to the growth and progress of the town that inherits his familj' name-, is friend and patron of, the Ladies, Literary Society. As a slight, return for the many favors sent them from his home in New Brunswick, the lading three years ago, , elected him an honorary member of their body. Au honor thev have not conferred on any other man. Before returning home from his late visit to Rensselaer, Gen. Van Rensselaer called on Mrs. Alfred Thompson and left in her care Green’s History of England in four volumes, with the request that she present them to the Ladies’ Literary Society, as the nucleus of a library that he hoped would make the Society a permanent institution of the town.
Accordingly, Mrs. Thompson, at the meeting of the Society. June 2<Jtb, presented the books and the Gon’s wishes for the permanent prosperity of the society in a few sensible practical remarks, which were responded to by the president, Mrs. Dr, Alter, who accepted the books and promised in the name of the society that the wishes of the donor should be res pec! cd. The society passed a vote of thanks to Gen. Van Rensselaer for his generous gift and decided that each member contribute a bcok to the new library which will hereafter be known as the Van Library. The books will be kept at Mrs. Alfred Thompson’s, until such time as the society can rent and furnish a hall to hold their meetings in, which they hope to ba able to do in the not very distant future. In the moantime the society will thankfully accept donations to their library from any individualwho, like Gen.
