Presbyterian Matters
Communion services were held at the Presbyterian church on §abbath. There was an acbesion of two by certificate on this occasion. A choir has been organized now, which makes a "decided improvement on the music. The Sunday school concert was 1 postponed for the present-, perhaps will be held on the evening of the first Sabbath of August, unless again postponed on account of the temperance sermon to be preached at that date.
bedtit of Daniel Duvall.
Daniel Duvall, whose illness has been lately noticed in this paper, died at bis residence in this place, last Saturday morning. The cause of his death is stated to have been catarrh of the and Ins illness has been of about two years duration. Mr. Duvall was born in Kosciusco county, this state, in February 1841, being thus less than forty-four years old at the time of his death. He was brought to Rensselaer in 1842, and, generally speaking, this place has bbeh his residence ever since. He was left an orphan at four years, his early life being, consequently, one of hardship and neglect. The family he leaves behind him consists of a wife and six children, the latter being all young, one of them an infant of five months. The ftmbral wtt£ held from the residence, Sunday afternoon, and„ Was conducted by the Rev. T. 0. Webster. It was very largely attended by the many friends and. acquaintances of the family.
The Colored Camp Meeting.
The, so-called, Colored Camp Meeting, now in progress at the Fair Grounds in Rensselaer, consists simply of a baud of fifteen or 20 colored people. Their preaching is bt a quality neither very good nor very bad, but their singing, though odd and unusual, is really excellent, rind by far the inost attractive feature of the ineetings. The attendance, last Sunday, was very great, being, as we should judge, not less than 1000 persons during the entire day. The week day evening meetings are also, some of them, quite largely attended. This (Thursday) evening, as we are informed, the G. A. R. Post hate accepted an invitation to attend in a body. Friday evening the parable of the Ten Virgins will be represented, and expounded. On Sunday, the great attraction will be the Prodigal son find eating the Fatted calf.
An Indiana Ranch:
The largest farm intheUmted States, north of the Ohio and east of Illinois, is owned by Moses Fowler, of Lafayette, and is situate d in Benton county. It contains between 25,000 and 30,000 acres, every foot of which is under fence and cultivation. At current rates this farm is easily worth §1,000,000. It is the meat beautiful land out of doors. This year Mr. Fowler has over 10,000 acres of corn, which at present prospects will yield him forty bushels per acre, or 4,00.000 bushels, lie is now engaged in cutting his hay crop, estimated at 5,000 tons and covering 2,51>0 acres. The growing crops and stocks on this royal farm are worth $‘250,000. Mr I owlet makes a study of imported blooded stock. Last week he made a cash sale of $48,000 worth. A single herd of Herefords (and only one of his many herds) is worth $50,000'. This larm is oyer seven miles each' way, and away to the east of its improvements has an elevator attached to it. and telephones, so that the superintendent can give his orders from his house and don’t have to resort to the old-fashioned method of riding and delivering verbal passages and orders. Taking it all in all it is one of the finest money-making ranches in the United States. It easily produces $100,00(» per annum.—[Logansport J» ureal. »*<*»..

A Card from the Ladies' Literary Society.
Gen. Van Rensselaer, who feels fatherly pride in whatever -contributes to the growth and progress of the town that inherits his familj' name-, is friend and patron of, the Ladies, Literary Society. As a slight, return for the many favors sent them from his home in New Brunswick, the lading three years ago, , elected him an honorary member of their body. Au honor thev have not conferred on any other man. Before returning home from his late visit to Rensselaer, Gen. Van Rensselaer called on Mrs. Alfred Thompson and left in her care Green’s History of England in four volumes, with the request that she present them to the Ladies’ Literary Society, as the nucleus of a library that he hoped would make the Society a permanent institution of the town.
Accordingly, Mrs. Thompson, at the meeting of the Society. June 2<Jtb, presented the books and the Gon’s wishes for the permanent prosperity of the society in a few sensible practical remarks, which were responded to by the president, Mrs. Dr, Alter, who accepted the books and promised in the name of the society that the wishes of the donor should be res pec! cd. The society passed a vote of thanks to Gen. Van Rensselaer for his generous gift and decided that each member contribute a bcok to the new library which will hereafter be known as the Van Library. The books will be kept at Mrs. Alfred Thompson’s, until such time as the society can rent and furnish a hall to hold their meetings in, which they hope to ba able to do in the not very distant future. In the moantime the society will thankfully accept donations to their library from any individualwho, like Gen. Van Rensselaer, feels an interest in the grow th and cuTtureTilTiteratui-ey anil iirhelping to make the society a permanent institution of oiu town. Mollie W. Babcock, Special Sec'y.

■ <?: A Marvelous Story * . TOLD IN TWO LETTERS. FROM THE SON: “ Gentlemen: Aly father resides at Glover, Vt He has been a great sufferer from Scrotula, and the inclosed letter will tell you what a marvelous effect Ayer’s Sarsaparilla has had in his case. I-think his blood mast have contained the humor for at least ten * years; but it did not show, except in the form of a scrofulous sore on the wrist, until about five years ago. From a few spots which appeared at that time, it gradually spread so as to cover his entire body. I assure you he was terribly afflicted, and an object of pity, when he began using your medicine. Now, there are few men of his age who enjoy as good health as he has. I could easily name fifty persons who would testify to the facts in his case. Yours truly, W. M. PHILLIPS.” FROM THE FATHER: pleasure and a duty for me to state to you the benefit I have derived from the use of e Ayer's Sarsaparilla. Six months ago I was completely covered with a terrible humor and scrofulous sores. The humor caused ,an incessant and intolerable itching, and the skin cracked so as to cause the blood to flow in many places whenever I moved. My sufferings were great, and my life a burden. I commenced the use of the Sarsaparilla in April last, and have used it regularly since that time. My condition, began to improve at once. The sores have all healed, and I feel perfectly well in every respect—being how able to do a good day’s work, although 73 years of age. Many inquire what has wrought such a cure in my case, and I tell them, as I have here tried to tell you, Ayer's Sarsaparilla. Glover, VU, Oct. 21,1882. Yours gratefully, Hiram Phillips."
