Messrs, Elmer Dwiggins and Delos Thompson are back from Ann Arbor, Mich. , ilrs. Dr. Horton returned from h*r protracted visit among relatives in Michigan, last Friday. Alice Irwin is to start this afternoon to. Richmond, Ind., ifeere she goes to take a special bourse in Primary teaching. Mr. J. C. Porter returned from his Soutliren trip last Saturday. His step-son Willie Salter is visiting relatives at Covington, Ky. for a few days. The State vice-president of" the Wt C. T. U’ announces that she will hold a county temperance dilivention at Rensselaer on Tnurkday, the 10th inst. Rev. T. 0. Webster makes the following announcement: “X .design preaching a series of sermons on SChrist’s sermon on the mount’, beginning next Sunday evening. The public are cordially invited to attend.
The Benton county Republican convention was held last Saturday. Thomas Wilcox was nominated for Treasurer and Zimri Thomas for Sheriff. The Hon. U. Z. Wiley was made chairman of the county central committee. Judge Hammond will make a 4th of July oration at Rewanna, Fulton county,. Jo-morrow. The Supreme court id taking its regular sumgier vacation now and the jucjge ~wi|l have ,a much needed rest from the onerous labors of the bench for a month or two. Mr. McCoy has begun the work of repairing the old part of his building on the corner of Van Rensselaer and Washington streets. Tiie old doors and windows will be replaced with som|tliing of more modern appearance and the old brick-work pajafed in imitation of stone-work. '' ./ % t The Newton county Republicans held their county convention, at Mount Airy last Monday. Isaac Smart was nominated for Treasurer, John R. Martindale for Sheriff', F. M. Hamilton, for Surveyor and John B. Lyons and Joshua Timmons for Cmmiossioners. The officers of the newly organized Blaine and Logan club are as follows: President, Erastus Peacock; Vice-President’ AV. W. Watson; Secretary, J. F]. Warren; Treasurer, W. B. Austin; Executive Committee, Albert E. Coen, Val Seib, W. B, Austin. The officers hoi4 their places for one month from the date of feeir election. Judge Hammond of the supreme bench was nominated by acclamation for the position he occupies at present. Judge Hamipond stands as one of the ablest attorneys in the state and the compliment he received at the . state convention wa& fully deserved. — [Rochester Republican. Seventy Years— Dr. Thomas Antrim, the Recorder of Jasper county completed his seventieth year last Monday. The occasion was commemorated by a surprise party, of pretty large dimensions, which met at his house at noon and remained foz several hours, disposing, in the meantime, of a bountiful dinner. The party was: made up principally of people from the out townships where the doctor has friends and relatives, as Gillam, Walker and Barkley. Notwithstanding his ripe age, and a recent severe spell of sickness the old doctor is apparently good for many years yet of life and j usefulness. : One Mohr ExcuMiON.r-Our old friend T. H-.. Born. —To Mr. and Mr?. F. B. Learning, Thursday morning, June 26th, a son. Albert Coen has contracted its principal of the Morocco Schools next year at S6O per month. The now reaches Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Jones, lately of Rensselaer, at Wichita, Kan. Messrs. Kirscli chd Nelson have secured the assistance of Mr. and Mrs. Bailey Martin as instructors in the Normal. At the Church of God, Sunday morning, at half past 10 o’clock, by request, subject, “The return of the spirit to God who gave it,” D. T. Halstead. 1 Daniel Duvall is quite low witll lung disease. Harry, his son, has been very sick but is slowly covering. They need aid in carings for Mr. Duvall. The K. of P. lodge of this place will install the following officers this evening- C. C., F. 13. learning; V. C., J. F.. Hardman; Prelate,R. B. Meyer; Keeper of Records and Seals, Erastus Peacock. Since last Sunday the .household of A. AV. Cole, the, route agent, now living at New Albany, have rejoiced over the birth of a fine girl. Everybody concerned, ndt even excepting the father, axe doing well. W- B. Austin, of the class of *Bl, Wabash college, was a delegate to the stale convention yesterday froun Rensselaer. He went to see Calki ms and £ox nominated. A\ r . He reports that the price of wool is lower now than for forty years previous. The result ot the refusal of Congress to restore the tariff on wool. Marriage Licenses for June: j AVilliam A. Cissel, nicely fitted up, with new paper, re-paintinf &c., and we are informed it will; be occupied as a Ladies’ furnishing store, with an entire new stock, and will be opened about the 15th inst. A rather fresh dutchman who was in town last Saturday with team and wagon, committed a gross act of indecency upon the street, and was .taken . b fi f° re Squire Purcupiie and. fined five dollars and costs. The dutchman thought iiii3 was a “h —1 of a free country.’' The quarterly meeting of tbe Free Will Baptist church convenes at Badger Grove,JWliite county, on the second Sabbath of July, for which reason there will be no services in Rensselaer on that day, but in two weeks later the last of of the series of sermons announced some time ago will be given. Col. W. C. Wilson; candidate on the Republican State Ticket for Attorney General, has accepted an invitation from the Blaise and Logan club to address people of this place on the current political issues, on Saturday evening, July 12th, 1884, at 7:30 p. m. Col. AYilson is an able and enthusiastic speaker. Let everybody turn out and bear him. AVe are glad to announce that the Rev. M. C. Miner,, the popular pastor of the Free Will Baptist church, of this place, has consented to remain with the charge until next March. His previousintention had been to return to the Ridgeland Theological Seminary in September, but as before stated, he im yielded to fee wishes of his congregation here and will remain } with them for six mott[is longer. , The-Ladies Industrial society of the Free AVill Baptist chuicb, meets every Thursday afternoon. The Society is now ready to take in work or to visit homes where sewing is wanted done. For the meager-sum of 10 cents per member present the society will give ; their labor to any one desiring work of this kind. Applications - should be made one week in advance of such meetings.
