They Will be Well Treated.

The time and placp for the Democratic Congressional Contention was arranged last week at Valparaiso. Tuesday, July 22nd, was selected as the time, and Rensselaer as the place for ’the convention. We are glad to chronicle this recognition of the importance of Rensselaer, and can assure our democratic-brethren of the 10th district that Rensselaer is nothing if not hospitable, and that they can deptnd on being well treated. The great and only Torn Wood will be present and address the people, it is said.

The lively wind of last Monday afternoon blew one of those scurvy old cotton-wood tree over agaiflst Mr. Halloran’s building, but the tree stood so near the building that it did not fall far enough to do any damage m striking it. After the shower, a long rope was tied in the top of the tree, and half a dozen or more “heavy weights” including old Maje, the bull dog, laid hold of it in order to pull it away fronr t he bofjfee ard over into the street. , They pulled like good ones, but just as they were about to succeed, the rope broke, and half a dozen, more or less, of men aDd boys, tumbled in a promiscuous heap in the ditch of dirty water, on, the other side of the street. The accident afforded much amusement to a large crowd of spectators.

The GuEENBACKERS.-The Greenbackers held their meeting and convention at the court house, last Saturday/aftemopu, in accordance with their published announcements. The Hon. H. Z. Leonard, greenback candidate for governor, and John B. Milroy, candidate ou the same ticket, for lieutenant governor, were both present and addressed the meetings. The following were the names of the candidates nominated for the County offices: Treasurer, John Jordan, of Carpenter township. Sheriff, 0. K. Ritchey, of Marion township. Commissioners: B. W. Harrington, of Union, and W. C. Pierce, of Marion, and for Surveyor, Wm. Iliff, of Jordan tp. The attendance at the meeting was sure to be slim in any case, and this time was made much more so by the fact that the republican precinct convention were held at the same time.
