Southern Affection for Faro.
Speaking of faro and other wicked games,*a Virginian, after remarking that in the better days of the republic, when everybody played faro, a gentleman was distinguished by the comment “He plays with red checks” from the poor white-check trash, dwelt upon the passionate love for the game which possesses men who get into its clutches. “Years ago,” he said, “ two of the finest lawyers in New Orleans on their way to New York stopped at Charlottesville, Virginia, because they heard that there was a man there who dealt faro. They found the man and played all night.
