S. RICHEY,
Circuit Court Notes.
Judge Ward came in on the 5:28 train Monday evening and opened court immediately after supper. The grand jury. was organized and a large amount ©f routine business disposed of. The circuit clerk says the docket this term has the fewest ca32S upon it of any he ever knew of. There have been terms when a less number of new cases have been begun, than at the present, but the number of old cases upon the docket were always much greater than now. JtJKORS. The regular panel of the grand jury consisted of the following: Wm M. Noland. Thos. It. DaiigherljV--.Peter Foulks, Henry Welsh, Harry D. Murray, Robert Parker. -Robert Parker having been excused from serving, Henry Kuster was chosen to fill his place. The petit jury was made up as follows: Stephen T. Cemer, James W. Lewis, John T. May, Phillip McElfresh, Wm E. Moore, George W. Casey, Abraham Leopold, Wm P. Baker, L. D. Marion, Wm E. Timmons, Thos. Crockett, Wm Cooper. Tne case in demurrer of certain property owners along Van Rensselaer street against the Town of Rensselaer, was argued before the court on Tuesday, Ml F. Chilcote and- L>e Witt C. Wallace -for the property owneus, and S. i\ Thompson and F. W. Babcock for the Corporation. This case involves the validity of the act of the Town Board in narrowing Van Rensselaer street, and assessing benefits and damages. The court still holds the case under advisement. The judge gave notice, Wednesday, that the court would adjourn on Thursday evening until Tuesday morniDg. The grand jury will probably finish their work to-day (Thursdiy). A number of young boys have been waiting about the court house , considerably, and it is presumed that somebody in the liquor business is likely to hear something drop. William Nichols, accused of stealing coal, wa3 indicted for petty larceny, and his trial begun yesterday afternoon, Walker prosecuting and F. W. Babobck defending.
Whether the United States are to regain their former pre-eminent rank as a commercial and naval power on the; seas, as a question that no American can contemplate with indifference. The subject is discussed with marked ability in the North American Review for April, by the Hon. Nelson Dingley, M. C., who opposes the project of admitting foreign-built ships to American register, and by Capt. John Codman, who is well known as a zealous :.dvo'eaTß UFthat measure. Judge J. A. Jameson, in the same number of the Review, discusses the question, “Shall Our Civilization, be Preserved,” pointing out the means that are at hand for withstanding the various agencies, physical, moral and intellectual, which threaten to overturn our existiug civil and social institutions. The Rov. Dr. Phillip Schaff gives a sketch of the “Development of Religious Freedom”. Dr. Felix L. Oswald writes of “Changes in the ,Climate of North America,” with special reference to the increasing frequency of disastrous floods. Prof. C. A. Eggert offers “A Plea for Modern Languages” in the 1 higher education; and Julian Hawthorn discourses of “Recent Criticisms of the Bible”, by the Rev. Dr. U. Heber Newton and the Rev. A. G. Mortimer.
Tefft the Station and Tcfft the Author.
_*The station on the “Three I,” Tailroutl, in Kankakee township, was by the railroad people named DunnvilJe, in honor of the Hon. I. D. Duuti, whose residence was but a short 'distance therefrom. When application was macie to the U. S. post-office authorities for the establishment of a postoffice there by that name, objection was made, on the score of the similarity of the name, when writthat of' Danville, in this state. In casting about for a name which would suit the somewhat fastidious post-office authorities the people of the vicinity bethought them of a certain eminent and most estimable gentleman who is tarrying-for the winter at the house of Mr. Dunn, and in his honor the new office was named. . Dr. B. F. Telit, D. D and L. L. D., is a resident of Bangor, Maine, but has been making his hoine for the winter with his old friend, Mr. Dunn. He has been profeseoff of Greek at what is now De Pauw university, president of Lima college, N. Y., and for years editor of The Radies Repository, a well known literary periodical formerly published at Cincinnati. He is a newspaper correspondent, of high repute, and- air author of national reputation Me has already published a fife of Louie Kossuth, the great Hungarian patriot, and -several other work, and is now engaged upon a work to bejcalled ‘Tthe Evolution of Christianity” and negotiating with a Chicago house for the publication of the' same.
