Governor Ordway, of Dakota, lias got a big boom, too, blit his is working the wrong way. The people of that territory are making a tremendous effort to have him removed from the governorship, and with good prospects, seemingly, of success. The enlightened people of Washington territory have lately followed the wise example of Wyoming territory, and adopted women’s stiffrage. A strong movement is now on foot to secure the appointment of Mrs. Dan way to the governorship of the territoiy. Mrs. Dun. .Way was largely instrumental in securing the adoption of the woman’s suffrage plan in the territory. The illustrated, Holiday supplement which is presented to our readers with this issue of The Republican is possessed of so many merits, both literary and artistic that we feel confident that all will find in it some valuable and interesting features. The chronological and necrologieal tables are especially valuable anti should be carefully preserved for future reference. - Speaker Carlisle after much tribulation has at last succeeding in making up his committees. The name of Wood; the 1300, Agricultural—-Reports—-member, from the 10th [lndiana, appears towards the tail ends of a couple of unimportant committees. The illustrious trace-chain swinger, u ill, we are pained to believe, be compelled to take a very obscure position during this, bis first and ouly term.. . .
Senator Sherman thinks that] an international railroad, 4,500 miles in length, should be built along the eastern slope of the great western mountain chain, from the United States to Patagonia, or somewhere near it, and has introduced a bill authorizing the President to write the countries interested, including Mexico and most of the South Ame rican states, to send delegates to Washington, to meet in convention during the year 1884, to take action in regard to the project The bill appropriates 850,000 to pay the expenses of the convention .
There has been considerable talk lately of consolidation of L., N. A. & C., and the C., T, St. L., & 0. railroad systems, and active negotiations looking to that result were lately in progress for sometime. It is now announced, however that, so far, nothing lias come of the negotiations but the project has not been abandoned but remains for the present, “in statu quo; with some probability that it will be taken up at an eaiiy day, and the consolidation consummated. In that case the ('. I. St. L. & Q. traius would be likely to enter Chicago over the C. & G. S. and L., X. A. & C. tracks.

A TERRIBLE DISASTER.
An L., flf. A. &, C. Passenger Train Completely Wreck ed Great Loss of Life and Z j Property The passenger and express train which passed Rensselaer Monday, at 10:33 m'the evening, met with a dreadful accident near Salem, in Washington county, at about five ■o'clock on Tuesday morning. Blue river bridge, regarded as one of the most substantial on the line, had been undermined by high water resulting from thirty six hours Continuous rains, and broke down as the train was passing over it, at the rate of 40 miles an hour. The locomotive and tender passed the bridge in safety, and wore left hanging upon* the abutment at the south end, and the Pullman sleeper remained on the track at the north end, but a combined baggage, mail arnbexpress car, a smoker and a ladies’ carr.ll plunged endwise into the river, where they took fire from the overturned stoves,-and, together with the car upon the track were quickly burned into ashes. -Sine persons are reported to have been killed instantly or to have perished in the fire. Many others were injured, some of whom will pfobably die. 0. A. Cox, the conductor, well known to many residents of Rensselaer, was injured, and at first reported killed, but later reports say that his injuries were slight.
The Holidays in Rensselaer.
Holiday week is always lively in Rensselaer and that of the present winter is, usually so. The Sunday Schools: On Monday evening Christmas entertainments were given by the Sunday schools, at the Presbyterian and M. E. churches. Large audiences attended at both places. Interesting literary and musical programmes were rendered, and a vast array of presents distributed at both places. ■s ; At the Opera House;— The Criterion Dramatic company began a four nights engagement at the Opera House, on Monday night. The company is possessed of much real dramatic merit, and all their performances so far have been well -worth the labor and expense of seeing them. The first night they gave Fauehon, The Cricket, Owing to the other attractions in town the audience was rather small. On Tuesday evening They played “The Ticket-Of-Leave man to an excellent house. On Wednesday was given “The Lady of Lyons” Bulwei’s most celebrated play. The attendance was fair, though" not quite so good as on the previous evening. Claude seems to be Mr. Wodiska’s strongest point, and he carried .through this difficult part in a manner deserving of the highest commendation. Miss Eva Pilchards, as Pauline quite surprised her audience by the excellence of her performance. The same company will give John Logan’s Curse tonight. .

CHARLES JI. I’KIUE, Clerk. Dec*l3-?0-?7. Insure against Accident. Farmers are apt to overlook the many dangers, and liabilities to accblentfii injury, to which they are, daily subjected. They handle a greater variety of tools and implements thnn almost any other class of men. They mount ladders, clamber about sticks, loads of hay,-onto the soof, and even climb trees. They are among the hoofs and horns and teeth Of their live-stock. They drive in a promieuouV way, in all sqWs of eouveyAnces, and at all times of tile day, and in the darkest shades of night. They are, therefore, at all times, liable to cuts, bruises, kicks, gores, bites, falls fractures and other injuries, Ad Infinitum. - - This being true, every farmer should deem tin accident policy indispensible.
